How To Contact College Coaches

It is important to grab the attention of the coach you are contacting. The aim of this letter is to guide you through emailing or calling a coach, and helping you to stand out from the other recruits. In this email you will receive guidance and examples about what is important to add to your email or call.

Here are things to think about when writing your email:

  • You want an email that is attention grabbing to the coach you are sending it to.
  • Your email should let the coach know that you are interested in their college specifically.
  • It should include who you are and how the coach should come watch you play, whether it be at a game, practice, or a showcase.
  • Make sure to be polite and professional.
  • You should include a detailed subject line that tells the college coach why you are worth scouting for the team.
  • You should have specific stats of yours for your sport in your subject line that impress coaches.
  • Your email should have a link to highlight reels of yours that shows coaches what you do best.
  • Make sure your email is personalized to the college you are emailing.

Here is an example:

You can also call college coaches. According to NCSA College coaches only receive an average of 7 phone calls a week for recruitment, meaning it can be a beneficial tool to help you stand out from other athletes.

  • Make sure to practice what you are going to say with a family member beforehand.
  • Research the college and the coach that you are calling so that you can be informed and it personalizes the call.
  • Find a quiet place to call.
  • Be professional.

We hope this information proves beneficial to your college recruitment process. Go to https://www.ncsasports.org/ for more information on the best way to contact college coaches, and even contact lists. It is important to be contacting coaches and starting your recruitment process now.
