Dear Fairhill Families,

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. It is always a pleasure to connect and reconnect with family, friends and loved ones!

These next three weeks before Winter Break are always an extra enjoyable time in elementary schools.  We are also going to be working incredibly hard to capitalize on these next three weeks of school to learn as much as possible. Our teachers are extremely skilled in balancing fun and academic rigor and in these next few weeks that skillset will come in handy!

Looking ahead, we have a PTA meeting next Wednesday, December 7th from 7:00-8:00. We will have our family browsing time at the Book Fair prior to the PTA meeting. Doors will open for browsing at 5:00 PM. See below for more details.

Have a wonderful week and as always, let us know if we can be of any support prior to the end of the calendar year.

All our best,

Ted & Courtney

FLE Information Session

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. Prior to the teaching of these lessons, Fairhill will be hosting an informational session where families can preview the Family Life Education media and lessons in Schoology and talk with school staff about the program. The info session will be held this Thursday December 1,  2022 from 6:00 to 6:30 pm. This session will be held virtually. If you are interested in attending, please complete this google form so we can send a Zoom link prior to the meeting.  All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time. If you have any questions, please email our FLE Lead Teacher, Mrs. Barnett at MEBarnett@fcps.edu

tie-dye

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities Day is Saturday,  December 3rd.  Show your support by wearing tie-dye to school on December 2nd!

This is a great prelude to Inclusive Schools Week, December 5th to 9th.  (See below).

Book Fair

The Book Fair is less than a week away! Next week, the library turns into a pop-up book store where your child can purchase books to keep! Your child will have two chances to shop—one day next week during school hours (your child’s teacher has the information for that specific day and time), and/or at our Family Night NEXT WEDNESDAY, 12/7 from 5-7 p.m. Every purchase made raises funds for our library, so we thank you for your support!

Level IV AAP Referrals

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Erica Campbell, Fairhill AART no later than December 15

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Erica Campbell, escampbell1@fcps.edu

Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings here at Fairhill.

Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes

The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.

The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.

Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.

Learn more about the recommended changes. The public feedback form will be open October 31 through December 1
