Message from Ms. Kearns

Dear Lake Braddock Families,

It is hard to believe we are already approaching Thanksgiving and the upcoming Winter Break!  We here at Bruin Nation are thankful for so many things including our wonderful staff and students, as well as our supportive community.  Our school is fortunate to be able to enjoy so many sporting events, concerts, theatrical performances, clubs, and other activities.

Because we have a short week next week and schools will be closed Wednesday thru Friday, there will be no newsletter next week.  We wish you and your family a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving break!

Go Bruins!

Lindsey Kearns

SaulPaul

Guest Speaker, SaulPaul, Nov 29!

We are excited to welcome SaulPaul to speak with our students on November 29th!

SaulPaul is a GRAMMY Nominated Musician with a Message. He has also presented 3 TEDx Talks, performed at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and been featured on America’s Got Talent. His life story of transitioning from tragedy to triumph has been told on screen via the documentary Tower to Tower as well as his memoir. Last year he released Be The Change, a critically acclaimed Children's album that is based on the principles of SEL. In addition to mentions from NPR and Billboard, The New York Times wrote, "This is infectious Hip Hop that the whole family can enjoy." Leveraging his decade plus experience working with K-12 youth, SaulPaul released the accompanying curricula and is proud that the educational programs are being adopted at schools across the country. Most recently, SaulPaul founded Change Water, a socially conscious bottled water company that donates to the local community with each case of water sold. Whether via art, education or entrepreneurship, SaulPaul is committed to #BeTheChange. CLICK HERE to learn more about SaulPaul.

Advisory/WIN Time will be canceled on November 29th so that instructional time is not impacted. Students will be provided with an opportunity to go to an alternative location if they choose not to participate in the assembly.

How Can You Help Your Child Have Good Attendance?

Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school.  This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

  • Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, make that the expectation.
  • Help your child maintain routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s  sleep.
  • Find out if your child feels engaged by his classes and feels safe at school. Make sure he or she is not missing class because of behavioral issues and school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, work with your school.
  • Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
  • Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
  • Encourage meaningful afterschool activities, including sports and clubs.

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, talk to your children’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work.  But remember, a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that goes on in the classroom.

Visit our website for more attendance resources.
