Friday, Nov. 11, is a student holiday/school planning day for the Veterans Day holiday. Veterans Day provides a great reason to pause, reflect, and recognize the extraordinary sacrifices our Veterans and their families have made on our behalf, and we thank them for their service.
As a reminder, schools and offices will be closed November 23-25. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Classes will resume on Monday, November 28. Learn more about the first Thanksgiving.

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges

On Thursday, November 10, our students will be participating in a Veterans Day Assembly.
Kindergarten and first grade will take place at 9:45 and second - fourth grade will take place at 10:30. Fifth and sixth grade will be participating in both assemblies.

- This is for students who were absent or not yet enrolled on School Picture Day, September 20, or are unhappy with their portrait and would like a retake.
- Be sure to let your child’s teacher know if you would like a retake.

Tuesday, November 15th 7:00 pm, Langston Hughes Middle School Cafeteria
Monica Rogers, South Lakes Pyramid’s Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS), will provide a pyramid wide parent presentation titled “Youth Substance Use: Education, Prevention and Intervention”. In light of the current nationwide opioid crisis, the presentation will have an opioid focus. Representatives of the Fairfax County Police Department will also be in attendance to answer any related questions. Additional topics to be addressed include:
- The most often used substances by youth
- Reasons youth use substances
- What substance use education, prevention, and intervention measures are offered to students in FCPS
- What parents can do support their children
- How to connect with county wide resources and supports

You may nominate more than one employee, or employees, across multiple categories. All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a brief statement. Additional information regarding each of these awards, as well as the criteria and considerations, are included within each link.
Outstanding Teacher – a teacher or librarian with 3 or more years of experience
Outstanding New Teacher - a teacher or librarian with less than 3 years of experience
Outstanding Leader – an Assistant principal
Outstanding Professional Employee- these positions could include School-Based Technology Specialists, Technology Support Specialist, Instructional Coach, Psychologist, Social Worker, School Counselor
Outstanding Operational Employee – these positions could include administrative and office assistants, custodial staff, food service staff, Instructional Assistants, Public Health Assistants, Public Health Training Assistants

In an annual planning process, Fairfax County Public Schools uses input from the community to help develop the school year calendar for the following year. Our framework for creating the calendar is available online to ensure transparency, as we work to build a calendar that is inclusive and equitable. Stay tuned for information about FCPS’ upcoming Calendar Survey. Parents/caregivers, students in grades 7-12, and employees will be invited to participate.
The theme of this year's National School Psychology Week from November 7-11, 2022 is “Together We Shine.” The theme’s concepts provide a framework for our schools to highlight both the importance of students’ and staff members’ individual strengths and attributes and the power of bringing together our ideas and actions as a school community.
