Floris Families,

Another amazing week of learning at Floris. It was so great to see school spirit and smiles everywhere. We will wrap up the week with the Annual Floris PTA Spirit Ball tonight at 6:30pm. Please enter through Door 6 (cafeteria door).

Please remember there are two deadlines next week. If you are able to support our Annual Giving Tree, all cards need to be at Floris by next Tuesday (12/14). All parent referrals for AAP Level IV are due by next Wednesday (12/15). No late referrals will be accepted.

Our Winter Music Showcase, featuring our 5th-6th grade strings and choral students is next Thursday evening (12/15), starting at 7:00pm, at Rachel Carson Middle School.

The cold weather is here, and the first official day of winter is approaching soon. Thank you parents in advance for ensuring students are dressed appropriately for the weather and outdoor recess. Please remember to stay tuned to inclement weather updates on the local news channels, Channel 21, or on the FCPS website.  If you haven’t already done so, this is a good time to update your child’s emergency care card and have an alternate plan in place if the weather causes school to open later, dismiss early, or close for the day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Rob Gibbs, Assistant Principal, ragibbs@fcps.edu

Winter warm clothes

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing our Social Worker, Maggie Seneca (maseneca1@fcps.edu), can assist you. You can also call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. The multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

Winter Weather Preparations

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay).

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in weCare@school, bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event

Congratulations

Congratulations to our Floris VASO (Virginia Science Olympiad) Team.  Out of 65 teams participating in this year's VASO competition, our Floris Future Scientists finished in the top 8 of seven different events!

Of special note, the Floris "Macromolecules" team finished 1st overall, and our "Logical Thinking" team finished 2nd overall.
