It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

Portrait of a Graduate (PoG) Goal-Directed and Resilient Individuals

Goal-Directed

As a part of the current FCPS Strategic Plan, students in K-12 work on Portrait of a Graduate (PoG) skills along with their grade level curriculum.

One of the PoG attributes is Goal-Directed and Resilient Individuals, which encompasses the following:

  • Engages in healthy and positive practices and relationships to promote overall physical and mental well-being.
  • Persists to accomplish difficult tasks and to overcome academic and personal barriers to meet goals.
  • Uses time and financial resources wisely to set goals, complete tasks, and manage projects.
  • Shows strong understanding and belief of self to engage in reflection for individual improvement and advocacy.

Mindfulness is one of the ways we support students with the PoG attribute Goal-Directed and Resilient Individuals. Wakefield Forest has worked in partnership with MindsInc. since 2015. This fall MindsInc. has been working closely with our first grade classes on teaching mindfulness strategies.

The book Sitting Still Like a Frog: Mindfulness Exercises for Kids is a great resource to learn more about mindfulness.

Additionally, classroom teachers integrate instruction on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) during morning meeting.

Appointments During School

If your child needs to be picked up during the school the day for an appointment, please call 703-503-2300 when you are on your way so we can have your child meet you in the front office. Due to renovation, students often have a great distance to travel to make it to the main office. We ask for a call ahead in the event you are running late or if something changes. We want to keep students learning in the classroom as long as possible, yet give them time to walk up to meet you from their classrooms.
