 Veterans Day Celebration

Thursday, November 10th

3:00pm

The staff and students at Halley will host our Veterans Day program on Thursday, November 10th at 3:00pm.  Parents are invited to attend, and our active-duty military personnel are free to wear their uniform.  Please join us!

Please send photos of your Veteran!

As part of our Veterans' Day celebration, we would like to create a Wall of Honor featuring photographs of the active-duty and veteran members of the military in our school community. Please send a photo of your military family member(s) and include the individuals name, rank, and branch of service by Friday, November 4th.

Please use this LINK to upload your picture by November 7th. As a result of the volume of pictures please only upload one photo of the service member.

You can also send a hard-copy photo into school with your child (please be sure to label it with your child’s name and teacher’s name if you would like it returned) or e-mail a digital copy to Paula Johnson-Tyler at pajohnsontyl@fcps.edu.

Thank you for your service!

Thanksgiving Luncheon

This school year, Halley ES is excited to be able to provide a Thanksgiving lunch menu for students on Thursday, November 17, 2022.  Unfortunately, staffing and supply chain challenges continue to impact daily operations in FCPS; as a result, the Thanksgiving lunch will not be available to guests.

Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes

The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.

The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.

Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.

Learn more about the recommended changes on our website. The public feedback form will be available on our website and will be open October 31 through December 1.

Staying Healthy

This Cold/Flu Season

Although the community level of COVID-19 in Fairfax County is currently low, cases of RSV, the flu, and other viruses are on the rise. It is still important for students to wash their hands regularly and cover their coughs and sneezes.

Please monitor your child’s health daily and keep them at home if they are sick. Visit FCPS' Health and Safety Guidance webpage for more tips.

2022-23 Strategic Planning

Opportunity for Students to Help Inform FCPS’ Future

You may have heard FCPS is developing a Strategic Plan that will serve as the school division’s roadmap for the future. We encourage every parent/caregiver, student, employee, and community member to participate in this important work.

The first engagement opportunity will be an optional survey, which will be open to students in grades 3-12. Knowing what is important to students will be very helpful to Dr. Reid, as she leads the planning of FCPS’ future. All schools, including ours, will schedule a date and time during the school day to administer the survey between November 2-18. If you would prefer that your child not participate, you may opt your child out of taking the survey. Please visit FCPS’ website for more information.
