End of Quarter SIS Updates

A message from Principal, Steven McFarlane:

princi

Kilmer Community,

I began the week meeting with a few families for a “Principal Meet & Greet” and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations. As a reminder, I have three more dates scheduled and I hope to see you there. Please see the blurb below for more information.

I truly love getting to work with middle schoolers because this is an important time for kids to develop as students, and as people. As adults we play such a vital role in supporting that growth. Kilmer is a place where students learn how to navigate relationships with peers and adults, learn how to advocate for themselves, and learn that they can do really hard things…even if they think they can’t. I had a chance to get into a lot of classrooms this week, and as you can see below, our students are doing great things in class. Although middle schoolers may give one word answers to questions such as, “How was your day,” continue to ask your child about their classes, or better yet have them pull out some of the work they’ve been doing and have them explain it to you. As we begin the 2nd quarter, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Lastly, Tuesday, 11/8  is a holiday, and there is no school for students on Friday, 11/11 because of a school planning day. I hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend. As always, reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Steven McFarlane

Principal

Pegasus Service Project

Please support the 8th Grade Pegasus Team Community Service Project.  We will be re-purposing used t-shirts to make re-usable bags.  We will then fill the bags with essential toiletry items to distribute to homeless individuals living in Washington, D.C.  The bags will be distributed through the non-profit organization, Homeless Hope, in early December.  Please consider supporting this effort by making a donation of a t-shirt or toiletry item by November 10.  See the Sign Up Genius for details: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4BA9A72BA2FEC25-pegasus1

  Thanks for your support,

Strategic Plan Student Survey

By now, you may have heard that FCPS is developing a new Strategic Plan. This plan will work like a roadmap, clearly defining the best route for us to take in the years ahead to reach our goals. Our students will be the first to lend their voices to this process by participating in an optional online survey. With students at the very heart of our work, we believe they should have an opportunity to be heard and provide feedback on what they feel is important.

The optional survey will be offered to all students in Grades 3 to 12. It is designed to protect students’ privacy and is anonymous. Kilmer Middle School will be administering the survey on Monday, November 14 during 4th period Advisory. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

To learn more, visit the FCPS Strategic Plan webpage

Attendance

It is important that your child attends school every day FCPS is in session unless he or she is sick or needs to be excused for a specific reason. If parent contact is not made, a note should be sent to the school with the student upon return. When parent contact is made, absences will be recorded as excused. If parent contact is not made within 48 hours, the absences will be recorded as unexcused. To report a student absent, please complete our online attendance form or call 703.846.8888 by 7:30 am to notify the Front Office if your student will be absent or arriving late to school. This form is designed for unplanned absences, late arrivals, and short-term prearranged absences only.

Reminder: 7th Grade Mental Health Screening Program

Seventh grade students will participate in the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program and mental health screening during their history classes on either Tuesday, November 15 or Wednesday, November 16. Seventh Grade families received notification about the program and an opportunity to opt out in an e-notify letter sent on Tuesday, October 25. Please note this is a separate opt out from the SEL screener. Please contact Erin Kestler etkestler@fcps.edu if you have questions about opting out.

Congratulations to Our New NJHS Candidates!

On November 1,  Kilmer NJHS Candidate Notifications were emailed to candidates’  school email accounts  [@fcpsschools.net] and the parent/guardian email on file in SIS.  We look forward to starting our year of Service Learning together, with the NJHS emphasis on Scholarship, Citizenship, Leadership, Service, and Character.

All candidate materials and activities will be located in the  NJHS Schoology Course. The NJHS Committee communicates with candidates in Schoology and school email accounts. In NJHS, we encourage and expect the students to manage their learning independently and with the guidance of the NJHS sponsors.

The first NJHS Mandatory Candidate Meeting is after school, first block, on November 9 in the Kilmer Cafeteria.  More information will be available soon in the NJHS Schoology Course.

NJHS is ready to Make a Difference!
