vets

In honor of Veteran's Day, we would like to invite the WFES community to share a picture of a veteran in your family or community with us to display on our WFES Veteran's Day bulletin board. Please send a picture of your veteran(s) and include name, branch of military, and years of service.

If you would like to submit a picture through email, please send your email attachments to both Nancy Garcia-Henderson nagarciahend@fcps.edu and Amy Rapuano alrapuano@fcps.edu.

Mrs. Garcia-Henderson will print out your pictures and information and include them on our bulletin board. Mrs. Rapuano will make a slide show of your veterans to include on the morning news show.

Please send all pictures no later than 11/9. Thank you for sharing, and we look forward to honoring our veterans.

Appointments During School

If your child needs to be picked up during the school the day for an appointment, please call 703-503-2300 when you are on your way so we can have your child meet you in the front office. Due to renovation, students often have a great distance to travel to make it to the main office. We ask for a call ahead in the event you are running late or if something changes. We want to keep students learning in the classroom as long as possible, yet give them time to walk up to meet you from their classrooms.

Keeping Arrival and Dismissal Safe

  • Please review bike safety with your child if they are riding to and from school. Our sidewalks are narrow and we want to be mindful of walkers.
  • We know many families are using Forest and Norfolk for drop off and pickup. Please be mindful of students in those areas during high traffic times.
  • Families should not be entering the den area during the school day unless they have a prearranged reason to be on site. Drop offs of water bottles and other school materials should be made to the main office at door 1.

Trick-or-Trash Candy Wrapper Collection

Trick

Our SCA and Mrs. Vick's Kindergarten class are working together to sponsor Trick or Trash boxes to collect candy wrappers, so they do not end up in a landfill after Halloween!  Please encourage your children to save all plastic candy wrappers to add to our collection boxes and help the environment. There will be one box in the cafeteria and one in the Steam lab. Students can deposit their wrappers individually or put them in a plastic baggy. We will collect wrappers from November 1st- November 10th.

Thank you for helping us to teach environmental stewardship and create ethical and global citizens for the future!

How FCPS Develops the School Year Calendar

calendar

In an annual planning process, Fairfax County Public Schools uses input from the community to develop the calendar for the following year. Our framework for creating the calendar is available online to ensure transparency, as we work to build a calendar that is inclusive and equitable. Watch your email for a feedback form, which will be shared with parents, staff, and middle and high school students.

Screening for Advanced Academic Program Services

Families who want to refer for level IV, full day advanced academic program services is due no later than December 15th. Information can be dropped off at the school office, no later than December 15th 4:00 PM or emailed to AWGray1@fcps.edu.

Referral forms for all advanced academic program services.

  • Grade 2 Universal Screener Referrals - Students in grade 2 may be identified for screening based on their performance on a universal screening assessment (e.g., CogAT, NNAT); or
  • Staff and Family Referrals - Students may be identified for screening based on a direct referral (a request) from their teachers, parent/guardian, or other person who knows and works with the student. This option is accessed by many FCPS parents who seek this level of service for their students. Approximately 70% of the students screened for full-time placement come through this pathway.

Educate Fairfax Awards Two Grants to WFES for STEAM

beat box

A playdough piano? Or maybe a secret message sent via radio?  Those are just a few of the many new hands-on projects coming to the Wakefield STEAM lab. Thanks to two grants provided by Educate Fairfax, a 501 c3 non-profit organization, Wakefield will receive classroom sets of Makey Makey circuit boards and Micro:bit pocket computers with robotic cars. Students in grades 2-4 have already enjoyed building unique pianos and beat boxes using the Makey Makeys. Mr. Tony Gray and Ms. Joan Brown, our STEAM teachers, have several other projects planned for the circuit boards that require coding physical objects into athletic games.

Micro:bits are tiny computers with programmable LED lights as well as sensors for light, temperature and magnetic fields, an accelerometer and compass. When added to a robotic car, students can design code around movement and environmental factors. The STEAM team is looking forward to the creativity this new technology will provide our students.
