Dear CWES Families,
Today was a joyful day at CWES, we had so much fun seeing all the spirit throughout our halls. It was a great way to end first quarter!
Celebrating our nation's veterans is a time-honored tradition at CWES and we are beginning to plan this year’s events. Each year we invite service members to speak to our students about their experiences, and this year we will carry on the tradition. If you have a veteran or active-duty service member in your family, we would love for them to join us ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14th. Please complete this form to indicate interest in sharing military experiences with our students.
We will also be continuing our Heroes in the Hallway. If someone in your family has served or is currently serving in the military, we want to celebrate them this Veterans Day! Please fill out this form and attach a picture of the person, we also sent these home in Tuesday folders this week. We will display them in the hall during the week of Veterans Day (November 7-11th). Please return to the main office by Friday, November 4.
A few reminders/requests:
1. We are having a lot of trash left on the playground throughout the week from after school use. We work hard to clean it up every day, but are asking community members to please be mindful, and throw away all trash. There are trashcans on the playground.
2. We have heard from a few community members about students being in their yards while waiting for the bus. Please remind your students to wait on the sidewalk.
3. Please remember to be kind at the bus stop.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Leslie Malkowski, Mindy Milliron, and Scott Reeder
CWES Administrative Team
Beginning on October 18, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes
The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.
The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.
Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.
Learn more about the recommended changes on our website. The public feedback form will be available on our website and will be open October 31 through December 1.
Strategic Plan Student Survey Coming Soon!
Students will soon be shown a short informational video at school and be asked to complete a survey providing feedback on their experience at school. This feedback will be used to help inform FCPS leadership as they work on planning for the future of the school system. Parents are invited to view the survey questions and get more information.

Families who want to refer for level IV, full day advanced academic program ar invited to attend an information session on Tuesday, November 2nd at 5:30 in the cafeteria.
The information below offers details about how students are screened for full-time (Level IV) Advanced Academic Programs' services. There are two screening pathways:
-
Grade 2 Universal Screener Referrals - Students in grade 2 may be identified for screening based on their performance on a universal screening assessment (e.g., CogAT, NNAT); or
-
Staff and Family Referrals - Students may be identified for screening based on a direct referral (a request) from their teachers, parent/guardian, or other person who knows and works with the student. This option is accessed by many FCPS parents who seek this level of service for their students. Approximately 70% of the students screened for full-time placement come through this pathway.
All referrals must be submitted no later than 4:00 pm December 15th.
For more information, please visit the AAP website for more information.
As you know, the annual Thanksgiving luncheon that included inviting our students’ parents and family members in years past has not been offered over the last few years due to COVID-19. This school year, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is excited to be able to provide a Thanksgiving lunch menu for students on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Unfortunately, FCPS has reported that supply chain challenges continue to impact daily operations of the FNS; as a result, the lunch this year will not be open to parents and other guests. We share in your disappointment and hope that we can bring back the family Thanksgiving luncheon next year.
What You Can Do to Prevent Substance Misuse
It’s true- youth are more inclined to listen to their peers than their parents. This is part of the way the brain develops. When a baby is born, their brain’s sole responsibility is keeping them alive. As they grow into adolescence, finding their tribe becomes important. Think of your top three happiest memories. What were you doing? How did you feel? Who was there? Each of these memories was likely a shared experience. You were laughing and smiling with loved ones, maybe food was even involved. Now think of your three worst memories. What was going on? How did you feel? Who was there? In each of these memories, you likely were alone or felt alone.
Substance use becomes a problem for some because they either are alone or felt alone. Connection has been shown to be important in our everyday lives- again think of your happiest memories. Fairfax County’s “Three to Succeed” describes protective factors that youth need to achieve their higher selves. If a child has at least three of these protective factors, they are more likely to succeed in life: having high personal integrity, having community adults to talk to, performing community service, participating in extracurricular activities, having teachers recognize good work, and having parents available for help. What you notice is five of the six protective factors involve connection with someone else, while the first protective factor describes connection with oneself.
