Virginia Purple Star Designation

Purple Star

The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display onsite. This week, Thomas A. Edison was notified that we met the criteria for this designation.

We will be receiving a Certificate of Recognition and an award coin; we will also be able to use the purple star logo on our website and in any communication that we deem appropriate.

Thank you to Counselor David Schlemmer and Head Librarian Sarah Mahan, who lead the team in submitting the package. In particular, the statement below highlights our amazing student ambassadors:

The reviewer wishes to affirm the entirety of the application submitted. The artifacts presented enabled the reviewer to obtain a strong sense of the hard work occurring at the school. The efforts of the peer transition program described was solid. Simply put, the success of transitional support to our military connected students would be nowhere without the efforts of students like these. Wishing them much success!

Homecoming Week

Thank you to everyone who worked to make Homecoming Week such a success! Students decorated the halls, performed in the “Follies”, attended the pep rally on Friday, cheered on the football team, and danced the night away last Saturday evening. The Edison community – SGA Sponsors Don Dight and Colleen Kelly and SGA students, Edison faculty and staff members, and parents all contributed many hours of their time to make the week so much fun. We especially appreciate the parents who helped chaperone the dance to make it a safe, enjoyable activity. Eagle Pride!

Morning Protocol for Student Drop-off at Door 5

The addition of learning cottages in the parking lot near Entrance 5 reminds us again that our number one concern is student and staff safety. When dropping of your student in the morning, please keep in mind:

  • Students may only be dropped off at the curb outside door 5.
  • Be sure to pull all the way up to the car in front of you; this will help move traffic along and keep waiting cars from passing stopped cars.
  • An attendant will be on site each morning to assist students with crossing the street and will help direct traffic.
  • We ask for your patience during the morning drop-off. The earlier you arrive, the easier it will be for traffic to move. The doors are opened at 7:30 AM.

An Ounce of Prevention

Students in our Edison HS learning cottage classrooms were reminded by their teachers last week to:

  • Look both ways before crossing the road to/from the learning cottages (entrances 3, 4, 5).
  • To use the crosswalks and walk across the road (entrances 3, 4, 5).

The FCPS Office of Safety and Security have been invited to Edison HS to provide additional security measures.

Impact Aid

Thank you to all parents who have already filled out the Student-Parent FCPS will be asking ALL families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Strategic Plan Student Survey Coming Soon

Students will soon be shown a short informational video at school and be asked to complete a survey providing feedback on their experience at school. This feedback will be used to help inform FCPS leadership as they work on planning for the future of the school system. Parents are invited to view the survey questions and get more information.
