MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The students and teachers have built a POWERfful Panther community and worked hard throughout the first quarter, and we’ve ended the quarter with a bit of fun! We had our first school dance yesterday, and it was a great success. And today our staff displayed their spirit with a costume contest. Monday is a holiday for students while teachers work on entering final quarter grades. We look forward to a starting a strong second quarter. We will return to school on Tuesday, November 1st to a Blue Day schedule.

Principal, Langston Hughes MS

Parents,  Impact Aid forms were sent home with your student(s) on 10/19/2022. These forms need to be returned no later than Friday, November 4, 2022

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning October 18, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If Sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All responses are confidential.

Watch the video to learn more about this process.

Social-Emotional Learning with Second Step

In this week’s lesson students learned about overcoming roadblocks by using If-Then Plans.  Students learned how to create plans and adjust them, as needed.  Our next SEL lesson will be on Monday, November 7 and students will continue to explore strategies for overcoming roadblocks.  Family conversation starter: Ask your child to review their current grades in StudentVUE and encourage them to create an If-Then Plan around their academic progress.  You may also find it helpful to create family If-Then Plans around household responsibilities, etc.

Holiday meals are a special time when families come together. Can you help make the holidays special for a local family struggling with food insecurity? Since 2016, Food For Neighbors has been providing holiday meals to students in middle and high schools throughout Fairfax and Loudoun counties. For every $50 donated to the Food for Neighbors Holiday Meals Program, they will provide a $50 grocery store gift card for a local family to purchase a nutritious and delicious meal this season. To donate, visit FFN Holiday Meals Program.

Hunger is an unwelcome guest during the holidays and with your generosity, families throughout our community will experience the joy of gathering around a table together to enjoy a nice meal.

Red Ribbon Week & Halloween

October is Substance Abuse Prevention Month, and Red Ribbon Week is October 23- October 31. Red Ribbon Week, sponsored by the DEA, is when young people pledge to live drug-free lives and show their commitment by wearing a red ribbon. Some of our very own elementary schools will be wearing red ribbons, to show their respect for Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Mexican-American DEA agent, who was murdered while working to expose drug traffickers.

Parents, you can help prevent substance use more than you know. The Fairfax County Youth Survey shows that students who say there are caring adults present in their lives are significantly less likely to engage in risky behaviors or report poor mental health conditions.

ca

Now that Halloween is approaching, it’s time to remind your students that drugs are often made to entice young people to use (e.g. marijuana edibles, colorful packaging, rainbow fentanyl). The younger a person begins to use drugs, the more difficult it is for them to abstain later in life (NIH).
