Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Good afternoon, SoCo Family!

It’s hard to believe that October is coming to a close! I hope you all have a Spook-tacular and safe weekend!

This past week has been one of our busiest but joyful experiences at SoCo.

On Tuesday, I had a great time playing VB in the students vs. parents game. Special shout out to Gabby for coaching me through the warm-ups and technical skills to play. The parents clearly enjoyed playing in the game and the students displayed great sportsmanship in their journey beating us in two straight games.

I’ve heard wonderful reviews of our Masquerade concert with the Orchestra this week as well. These students and Mrs. Swift are putting in numerous hours to work toward this and future concerts. I’m very proud of these Stallions.

As a reminder, we have new expectations for fans to follow at our next (and last) home football game (next Friday, Nov. 4). Here they are:

Lastly, this is a quick reminder that Monday is a Teacher Workday, so students do not come to school.

Have a great weekend.

Upcoming Parent Training Opportunity

We have a training session for parents about opioids and fentanyl on November 1 at 6:30 here at SoCo (in the library). This is a “must see” presentation for parents. Unfortunately, we’re having too many cases of students experimenting with this type of drug, so I encourage you to attend if you are able. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

upcoming events

food for neighbors

Holiday meals are a special time when families come together.

Can you help make the holidays special for a local family struggling with food insecurity? Since 2016, Food For Neighbors has been providing holiday meals to students in middle and high schools throughout Fairfax and Loudoun counties. For every $50 donated to the Food For Neighbors Holiday Meals Program, they will provide a $50 grocery store gift card for a local family to purchase a nutritious and delicious meal this season. To donate, visit FFN Holiday Meals Program.

Hunger is an unwelcome guest during the holidays and with your generosity, families throughout our community will experience the joy of gathering around a table together to enjoy a nice meal. Thank you for your generosity!

safety
hidden

Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

This is a hands-on learning adventure for

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ONLY! We guide you through a presentation that opens your eyes to what is right in front of you. This program begins with a setup of a teenager’s bedroom which includes close to 100 “red flags” that indicate risky behavior. Parents are encouraged to touch everything and identify our red flags. Times have changed since we were teenagers… do you think you can find them?

Hello!  We hope you are all enjoying the sunny weather this week!

As a Parent Teacher (Staff) Student Organization (PTSO), one of the questions we are asked is, “what do my membership dues pay for?”   Membership dues, one of our biggest sources of financial support, are used to support a wide variety of South County High School programs to include the Welcome Back Breakfast and Staff Appreciation lunch for teachers and staff, the Honor Roll program, Classroom and Club Support, Scholarships, Science Fair and so much more! Would you please consider joining and being part of a team that supports our Stallion family?

We are also looking for committee chairs.  Please click on the links below.  We appreciate your support.

dia de los muertos

Día de los Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Tuesday, November 1, and Wednesday, November 2, are “O” Days this year. To learn more about Día de los Muertos, watch this video. While Día de los Muertos is largely celebrated in Mexico and Latin America, it also coincides with All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). These days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants worldwide to honor those who have died and gone to heaven (All Saints Day) and those who may still be in purgatory (All Souls Day). The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

native amer month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
