Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather this past long weekend.  A big thank you to the PTA, parents and students who came out on Saturday to clean up the courtyard and grounds at our school.  It was a great time of working together for a common cause and the outcome is lovely.  We appreciate all of your efforts and your green thumbs!

This Friday we will kick-off the Runathon in classrooms and we will share the video link with all of you.  We hope you will enjoy the Roadrunner’s adventures as he models kindness throughout Vienna.  We encourage everyone to participate in the Runathon, in any way that works for your family.  Train together, raise money together or simply cheer each other on.  We look forward to seeing many of you on November 10 for the big event!

When walking your children to or from school, please only cross Marshall Road at the crosswalk.  This is a very busy road and we want to make sure everyone is safe.

Students will be dismissed 2 hours early this Friday and will not have school on Monday, October 31.  We do not celebrate Halloween at school.  Please remind students that costumes are not permitted at school and we encourage students to keep candy at home after Halloween.

Wishing everyone a safe and festive fall holiday season.  Have a great week!

Peace.

School Events & Information

Lost and Found

Many  sweaters, sweatshirts and coats have made their way to our Lost and Found.  Please take a moment to watch this video to see if you recognize an item that belongs to your child.

Dismissal Change / Bike Train

If you have a child in  grades K-2 who is going home on the Bike Train, please notify the attendance office, so we can make sure the teachers and the office are aware of the dismissal change.  We closely monitor dismissal changes for these grades and need to know who is participating in the Bike Train.  Please email us at MarshallRoadElem.Attendance@fcps.edu or call 703-937-1500 or 1515.

PTA Update

Marshall Road’s 12th Annual Runathon kicks off this Friday!

The PTA is excited to host Marshall Road’s 12th Annual Runathon on Thursday, November 10.  This Friday we will kick-off our event—students will come home with their Runathon envelopes and our Runathon website will go live.  We hope you will consider making a donation.  This is our ONE main fundraiser of the year and money raised supports the PTA’s programs throughout the year, including community events (like our Family Picnics, Ice Cream Social, and International Night), field trips, author visits, classroom grants, teacher appreciation, and more!  We also hope you will come out and join us on November 10.  You can sign up here to volunteer (all volunteers will receive a free Runathon t-shirt!), or you can come run with your student or simply cheer them on as they complete their laps.  It’s a fun day for the whole school community.

Join the PTA before November 16 and be entered in a raffle to win a spirit wear gift certificate!

There is still time to join the PTA!   Join between now and our next PTA meeting on November 16 and be entered into a raffle to win a $25 gift certificate to our                      spirit wear store.  We encourage all MRES family and community members to join the PTA!  Visit our website to complete your membership.  Our calendar year runs July 1-June 30, and memberships need to be renewed each year.  An annual membership is $15 for one parent /guardian, $10 for a second parent/guardian (a total of only $25 for a family), and just $10 for faculty and staff.

Help Reduce Waste this Halloween by Recycling Halloween Candy Wrappers

Each year in the United States, more than 600 million pounds of candy are purchased for Halloween.  The vast majority of candy wrappers end up in landfills because they cannot be recycled by most curbside recycling programs.  This year Marshall Road is participating in the Trick or Trash program to collect candy wrappers (and only candy wrappers please!) for recycling.  Simply bring your candy wrappers to school and place them in the Trick or Trash box in the lobby from November 1-18.  The plastic from the candy wrappers is used to create doggy bags for local animal shelters.  To learn more about how wrappers will be recycled, watch this video.

November Bike Train and Walking Wednesday

The next Bike Train will be Tuesday, November 1 and the next Walking Wednesday will be November 2.  We hope you can join us!  These events are meant to encourage walking and rolling to school, promote fitness and exercise, and reduce traffic congestion at drop-off and pickup time.  These events are also a wonderful time to connect as a community.  As always, we need your help to make these events a success.  Please consider signing up to help chaperone the Bike Train or help greet walkers on Walking Wednesday

Communications

ONEkindactVienna Campaign

This week our school and community will be continuing to focus on the character strength of Kindness.  Kindness means you are generous to others and you are never too busy to help out. You enjoy doing good deeds for other people.

Kindness is grounded in the belief of a common humanity in which others are worthy of care, attention, affection, and compassion.  Kind people think about the needs and feelings of other people, and then act to help those people.  Kind people are selfless.  That is why a true act of kindness is distinct from helping another person in order to simply gain something for yourself.  An individual with the strength of kindness helps others because it's’ the right thing to do, not because they expect any reciprocal treatment or gain in reputation.
