Message from Ms. Kearns

Dear Lake Braddock Families,

What a rewarding and busy week in Bruin Nation as we entered playoff season, theater season, concert season and the end of the 1st quarter!  I was lucky to attend events in all of these categories.  Our cheer team took home first place in the region semifinals on opening night of our Middle School musical, Frozen, Jr!  Both Middle School and High School Orchestras each performed a wonderful showcase of their talents!  And our Band took home Superior Rating at State Marching Assessment this past weekend!

We are so proud of all our Bruins as we gear up for the second quarter of school.  Monday is a student holiday, so we hope you get to relax and take a break.  We will see you all back at school on Tuesday!

Go Bruins!

Lindsey Kearns

Strategic Plan Student Survey

Students will soon be shown a short informational video at school and be asked to complete a survey providing feedback on their experience at school. This feedback will be used to help inform FCPS leadership as they work on planning for the future of the school system. Parents are invited to view the survey questions and get more information.

If you would like to review the survey or opt your child out of participating in it, please visit this webpage. The deadline to submit an opt-out form is October 28.

native american month

November is Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

dia de los muertos

Dia de los Muertos-Nov 1 and Nov 2

Dia de los Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Tuesday, November 1, and Wednesday, November 2, are “O” Days this year. To learn more about Dia de los Muertos, watch this video. While Dia de los Muertos is largely celebrated in Mexico and Latin America, it also coincides with All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). These days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants worldwide to honor those who have died and gone to heaven (All Saints Day) and those who may still be in purgatory (All Souls Day). The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Important Reminders

Impact Aid Survey

FCPS will be asking ALL families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Watch the video to learn more about this process or check out the FCPS Impact Aid page.

We Need Your Consent for Digital Resources!

At Lake Braddock, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your student’s teachers if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources they have chosen to use this year.

Safe Routes to School News

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month.  One easy way to keep Bruins safe as they walk to school is to reduce the traffic congestion near our school.  Congestion is a problem that creates more congestion.  Traffic congestion causes bus delays that keeps bus riders from riding the bus.  Congestion causes walkers to feel unsafe so they are more likely to drive to school.  Traffic congestion causes some car riders and carpoolers to drive, park and drop off students in unsafe manners.  If we all do our part to find a better way, everyone benefits!

The Safe Routes to School Committee is inviting volunteers to participate in our upcoming Walk About Audit, on Nov 17th from 2-4 pm.  Students, staff, parents and community members are all welcome.  Please contact LBSS.SRTS@gmail.com for more info.

Lake Braddock was awarded this Walk About Grant by the Virginia Department of Transportation, to help identify unsafe areas or intersections within a 1 -2 mile radius of our school.  About 15% of Lake Braddock students are assigned as walkers, because they live within 1.5 miles of LBSS.  This audit will specifically address barriers that are keeping our assigned walkers from walking or biking safely to school, since we want as many students as possible to enjoy all of the mental and physical health benefits of actively commuting to school.

Congrats to everyone who participated in LBSS Walk to School Day Oct 7th and International Walk to School Day Oct 12th!  Make your plan to walk on Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on Wednesday November 16th!

Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes

The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.

The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.

Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.

Learn more about the recommended changes on our website. The public feedback form will be available on our website and will be open October 31 through December 1
