Book Character Day- 10/20/22

As we continue to return to normal operations, we are able to return to some of the Pine Spring traditions that our students have loved in the past. One of our school traditions has been to have a Book Character Day as part of our Book Fair celebration.

This year on Thursday, October 20, 2022 we have Book Character Day at school. This is an opportunity for students to dress as their favorite book character during the school day, and we encourage you to continue the fun at the book fair evening event.

To ensure that the event keeps with the intent of the occasion as well as preserves the wellbeing of our children, we do have some expectations.

  • All costumes should be linked to a book.
  • All costumes must include hard bottom shoes. Students should not wear slippers.
  • Costumes should not include any weapons, blood, or other violent depictions.
  • Costumes can not have large head pieces or masks that could impact students for accessing their learning.

Parent Conferences

We are near the end of the first quarter of school. While Pine Spring makes every effort to keep you up-to-date on your child's learning, we encourage you to reach out to your child's  teacher if you are interested in scheduling a conference. For your convenience , we offer in-person, virtual, and phone conferences. Please email, call, or send your teacher a Talking Point to schedule a time.

Bobcat Spotlight- AART

Haynes

We are lucky to be home to so many outstanding teachers. While most families know our

classroom teachers, we want to highlight some of the fantastic behind-the-scenes

heroes that help drive daily Pine Spring Bobcats’ success.

This week we are spotlighting our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART), Tracy Haynes. Tracy has been an AART for 6 years. She started her journey as a classroom teacher at Parklawn Elementary, and after 5 years, she became an AART at Glen Forest Elementary. She came to Pine Spring in 2020.

Pine Spring is privileged to have Mrs. Haynes full-time, where she can focus her time on

supporting Pine Spring in ensuring that all students have access to higher-level

thinking strategies and routines throughout their school day.

Mrs. Haynes support students in K-2 by providing classroom lessons around critical and creative thinking. She also directly supports students in grades 3-6 who qualify for Level III and

Level IV AAP services. She works with students in small groups to provide differentiated access to the AAP curriculum and strategies.

When she is not working directly with students, she support both teachers and families in increasing their knowledge around AAP and Young Scholars. If you have questions about these topics, please reach out to Mrs. Haynes at tlhaynes@fcps.edu

Grade Level Updates

Each month our grade levels are sharing what their classes are focusing on in Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. We encourage you to take a moment each month to look at what your child is learning, and read about ways you can help at home.

Please click on your child's grade level page to find out more about their day.

Multilingual Podcast

Fairfax County Public Schools produces a multilingual podcast every two weeks to highlight relevant information for families in their own languages. It is produced in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Korean.

The latest episode introduces the FCPS Trust Policy and reminds families to review the Student Rights and Responsibilities document. Learn more about the Podcast.

Dyslexia Awareness Month

To recognize that October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, Fairfax County Public Schools will offer a Dyslexia Open House for staff, community members, and parents/caregivers.  Please join us on October 20, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Willow Oaks (lobby and Room 1000-A) to learn more about dyslexia support in FCPS.  Open house participants will include Instructional Services, Office of Special Education Instruction, Assistive Technology Services, Parent Resource Center, School Psychology Services, Ombudsman Office, Procedural Support, MTSS, SEPTA, Decoding Dyslexia, NAACP & ED Futuro.

The open house will be followed by a presentation about dyslexia support in Fairfax County Public Schools and an opportunity for a staff panel to respond to questions.  Staff who are interested in attending should register here.  Registration closes October 19, 2022, at 5:00 p.m.

The Parent Resource Center will host an open house for parents to learn more about dyslexia and how to support students with dyslexia on October 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. Learn more about PRC events on their website.

The FCPS Dyslexia handbook also provides information and resources to families. It reflects a division-wide commitment to ensure that the needs of students with dyslexia are met as a result of collective responsibility and collaboration across general and special education contexts.

Special Education Review Final Report

FCPS is committed to providing excellence for all students, and continues to seek ways to improve and ensure the highest quality of special education and related services for students and families. At the request of the School Board, the FCPS Office of Auditor General engaged a consultant to conduct an independent, third-party review of FCPS’ special education program in October 2020.

American Institutes for Research® (AIR) presented their final report during the School Board’s October 4 work session. Watch the video of AIR’s presentation and visit FCPS’ Office of Auditor General webpage for more information.

The School Board will hold a second session to discuss a framework for the Special Education Enhancement Plan at their Tuesday, November 15 work session.
