There is no school tomorrow in honor of Diwali. The Bren Mar Park office will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Nominations are now open for the Outstanding Employee Awards! To submit a nomination for a Bren Mar Park Outstanding Employee, please complete the nomination through this Google form link: https://forms.gle/WT8VwFHbUWMQg5118. You may nominate one employee at our school or multiple employees (one individual may only nominate one employee per category.)
All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a few sentences about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category. The Google form link has more information regarding the criteria for each of these awards.
The deadline to submit a nomination is Monday, November 6.
If you have any questions, please contact Jen McGough at jamcgough@fcps.edu.
Be a part of future planning! Join us in-person or online for BMP's Advanced Academics Program (AAP) Planning Community Night to learn more about level IV services, local level IV programs, and how local level IV might look at Bren Mar Park. This will be a chance for families to share feedback and have questions answered.

Bren Mar Park’s Coffee and Conversation are an informal, interactive opportunity to learn and discuss a topic of interest to our families. Presenters share resources and information on a variety of topics and parents are invited to engage in questions and conversation. Most will be held concurrently, some online and others in-person.
Our next topic will be “Building Bilingual Vocabulary through Everyday Activities” on Friday, October 28th at 9:30 a.m. in the SACC room. We invite our families to come and learn ways to continue developing their home languages. Due to the interactive nature of this presentation, we will be offering it in person. Contact our Family Liaison, Sandra Chetelat, sfchetelat@fcps.edu, with any questions.
Beginning October 18, FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If Sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All responses are confidential.
Returning this form is important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
Watch the video to learn more about this process.
We invite students and staff to join us in Storybook Character Day. Students are welcome to dress up or create a costume as a character from a book on Friday, October 28th. Students should highlight the book from which they are dressing up! Any costumes/dress up must follow school guidelines, which include no masks or weapons of any kind.
On Thursday, November 17, families are invited to join their children for Thanksgiving lunch here at Bren Mar Park! We are not able to provide Thanksgiving school lunches to families due to staff shortages, and we invite families to bring their own lunch as together we celebrate all the things for which we are thankful!
Thanks to donations from the Fire Fighters and Friends organization we have received some winter coats. As the weather grows colder, if you find your student is in need of a coat, please reach out to Sandra Chetelat, sfchetelat@fcps.edu.
We are extremely grateful to the Fire Fighters and Friends organization for their ongoing support to our BMP community with donations of backpacks, school supplies and coats.

The Science of Reading
Many of you have been hearing conversations about The Science of Reading. In the BMP newsletter we will start learning about the five main domains (Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension) and the goal of the SoR.
The Goal: To teach students a method of decoding that they can use for new or unfamiliar words.
The first domain that we will focus on is Phonological Awareness:
- Phonological awareness is the ability to notice the sound structure of spoken words.
- Phonological awareness is the ability to identify, isolate and manipulate language at the individual sound level.
- Basic phonological awareness skills include phoneme blending and segmentation.
- Advanced phonological awareness skills involve manipulating phonemes including, deleting, substituting, or reversing phonemes within words.
Phonological awareness is essential for skilled reading and is needed for sight- word learning.
Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency and Vocabulary all lead to
COMPREHENSION
Reading aloud to your child builds the foundation of literacy learning. Listening comprehension comes before reading comprehension.
Enjoy reading some good books and next time we will learn about the second domain(phonics).
