Counseling Den
Hello Cameron Families,
Cameron’s Character Strength for the Week of October 17-October 28th is Open-Mindedness. Open-mindedness is when you are willing to try new ideas and see other people’s points of view. Why is open-mindedness important? Open-minded individuals are often good listeners and called upon to provide a balanced viewpoint. Both listening and the ability to deliver reasonable and practical advice are marks of good friends and confidantes. This strength helps individuals form meaningful and lasting relationships.

“Together we can do great things” -Mother Theresa
Dear families,
It is that time of the year, the first Parent/Teacher conferences. Parent-teacher conferences are one of the most useful tools that we have as parents to ensure our children are getting the most from their education. But as helpful as they are, they can be downright stressful for everyone involved. Parents want to get the lowdown on how their children are doing, and teachers want to make sure they communicate everything a parent needs to know about their teaching style and how the child is performing in school — all in a 15-minute block of time.
With so much to cover in such a short amount of time what parents can do to get the most out of parent-teacher conferences is to be prepare with some good questions. See bellow a list of questions for your consideration.
-
May I tell you about my child? Mention to his/her teacher some changes in the family dynamics that might be affecting your child. Something about his/her personality, likes and dislikes.
-
How is my child doing emotionally? Find out about friends, social interactions, emotional connections at the school. Concerns your might have.
-
What are my child’s academic strengths and weaknesses? It is important to know what is working for your child and were he/she will need extra support.
-
Is my child performing on grade level? Finding out the at what level your child if performing can help you and the teacher to create a plan.
-
How can I help at home to support what you’re doing in the classroom? When the parents are more involved, the children tend to struggle less.
-
Is there a goal for my child for next quarter? Work together with the teacher to achieve something extra by the next quarter.

Talking Points
We are excited to begin using Talking Points, which will serve as a method of communication between school and families. It allows teachers to send messages to their families via text, and families to send messages to their teachers that are automatically translated. There is also a free app families can use for messaging (iOS and Android). Be on the lookout for an introductory message from your child's teacher in the coming weeks (or maybe you've already received one!), and feel free to learn more about this platform on the FCPS site.

These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”
