October is National Bully Prevention Month

Hello Hawks!

As you may know, October is National Bullying Awareness month. Our school is promoting a DARE TO CARE program and will be focusing on anti-bullying strategies with all grade levels. We want to empower our students to show kindness with respect and to stand up to bullying! FCPS defines bullying as “any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; it involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. Bullying includes cyber-bullying. Bullying does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.” Counselors will be visiting every classroom this month to discuss bullying and to teach students how to handle situations if they arise.  Also, it is important to remember that standing up to bullying can be done in many ways. A student may feel comfortable telling the bully to stop or he/she may want to befriend the target to show support. However, in any situation we need our students to ALWAYS tell an adult what they witnessed.  At home, you can support our efforts by discussing the importance of treating all people with kindness and respect. A great resource to review with your student is the Stop Bulling website

Thank you so much for all your support! Our families are a big part of what makes Hayfield Elementary such a special community! Please see below for the dates and themes for our DARE to CARE week.
