Opioid Awareness

Dr. Reid sent an Opioid Letter to families that is linked on the district website HERE.  Please take some time to:

  • read about tips for keeping children safe,
  • register for a webinar on "Everything You Need to Know About Opioids" that will be held live on Thursday, November 10, 2022, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. (you may opt to register to receive the recorded version instead), and
  • learn about additional Fairfax County resources.

SOS Screening (Signs of Suicide)

Liberty Middle School will be conducting the SOS screening with 7th grade students on Tuesday, October 11th (Pride and Explorers teams) and Tuesday, October 25th (Patriots and Navigators teams)

Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.  Follow-up calls to parents will be made if necessary.

We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. You can also view this parent video to learn more.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Angie Huber at (703) 988-8222, aahuber@fcps.edu or Joanna Wheeler, (703) 988-8132, jwheeler@fcps.edu
