Excellence Awards 2022

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

This week we celebrated the FABULOUS work of our multi-age low incidence team as they won an FCPS Excellence award for their innovative commitment to supporting their students and helping them grow. These teachers are defined by their ability to see promise in each of their students and by their creativity and persistence in developing and implementing an academic program to nurture that promise.

Congratulations to Victoria Bowen, Danielle Houston, Mclaine Sheehy, Danielle Spiroch, Chitra Venkatanarayanan & Mandy Walter! Thank you for always being able focus on what the students are ABLE to do, thus eliminating typical barriers to instruction and communication.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Opt-Out letters were sent in September.  If you would like to confirm your child’s status, please visit SIS Parent Vue (logged into the web version, not the app).  Click on Student Info.  Scroll down and you will see your child’s opt-out status.

If you have questions please contact your child’s counselor, Beth Mertens Grades K, 1, 5, & 6 (eemertens@fcps.edu ) or Shari Hirsch Grades 2, 3, & 4 (swhirsch@fcps.edu ).

6th grade

Message to 6th grade parents/guardians:

Beginning the week of October 31, 6th grade students will receive two lessons on the topic of sexual harassment.  These lessons seek to provide students with the necessary information, resources, and strategies to help prevent occurrences of sexual harassment as well as outline the steps to take if they feel they or their peers are targets of these behaviors.  In addition, the lessons share how schools support targeted students so that they can focus on learning in an environment that feels comfortable and secure.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of the two sixth-grade lessons on the topic of sexual harassment.  Letters that provide more information on how to opt your sixth-grade child out of these lessons and the opt out forms will go home on Friday, September 30 in your student’s Friday Folder.

If you do not receive the letter or opt-out form or have any additional questions, please contact the 6th grade school counselor, Beth Mertens at 703-633-7400.
