Staff Spotlight: Academy Counselor

Maria Martin Headshot

Mrs. Martin relocated to Northern Virginia from Novi, Michigan in 2012 with her husband Scott, and three children - Teena, Imanee and Matthew and their westie, Chance. Their family has grown to include Indigo and Juniper, their playful felines. She has been working at Fairfax Academy since August 2014 and has over 12 years of experience as a school counselor. She was a counselor in Detroit Public Schools and also has a background in vocational rehabilitation counseling, higher educational counseling (transition counseling and financial aid counseling), child and family therapy, as well as foster care.

Mrs. Martin attended Wayne State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Community Agency Counseling and School Counseling. She recently completed her Master of Education in Administration and Supervision at the University of Virginia.

Mrs. Martin’s favorite part of her job is seeing her students do what they love to do at Fairfax Academy and ensuring that they have all the support in place to help them achieve their goals/dreams. The passion and talent that the academy students have makes her job very rewarding. Additionally, Mrs. Martin's passion for counseling and helping others is what makes her job at Fairfax Academy so special. It allows her to do what she loves in a dynamic environment that is accepting, engaging, supportive and devoted to creating amazing educational opportunities for all students.

Mrs. Martin loves Fairfax Academy because it allows her to engage with a diverse group of students and families from all across Fairfax County. She believes the Academy gives students a glimpse into their futures which inspires them to work hard to meet the high expectations set upon them by our dedicated academy teachers and staff.  She has created a calming, welcoming and comfortable space for students to come to whenever they need academic, social and/or emotional support.  We are so happy to have Mrs. Martin as our Academy Counselor!
