Eric Johnson

Principal's Message

Dear Cameron Families,

It has been a wonderful start to the school year! I’ve been able to visit classrooms to see the meaningful moments of learning going on across our amazing school. Your children are passionate and engaged in their learning, and I am so glad that we are together again for another school year in person.

I am writing to let you know that I will be out on medical leave beginning October 3. I am planning to return by the end of the month. I appreciate your thoughts and good wishes while I am at home recovering. With the support of our region leadership, we will have an excellent team of experienced leaders supporting the school.

During my absence, interim assistant principal Ms. Kristin Bennink will be supported by FCPS special projects administrator and former principal, Ms. Linda Ferguson.  This ensures that the administrative team will be fully staffed until my return.

I will miss my cheetahs every day and look forward to being back with you all very soon!

Take Care,

Mr. Eric T. Johnson

Principal

Counseling Den

Hello Cameron Families,

Cameron will be partnering with the Positivity Project again this School year.  For families that are new to Cameron, the Positivity Project (P2) is a character education curriculum dedicated to empowering our students to build positive relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others.

This year staff will use P2 resources at least twice a week during Morning Meetings to teach our Cameron Cheetahs positive character strengths.  The Positivity Project helps schools develop a common vocabulary, a positive culture, and self-awareness to be empathetic students and peers.

Cameron’s Character Strength for the Week of October 3rd is Teamwork.  Teamwork is when you work well as a member of a group or team. You are loyal, reliable, and dedicated to helping your team achieve its goals.

Stay tuned to News You Choose to discover more about your child’s P2 experience at Cameron.   Also, our Family Liaison, Ms. Trupo will provide Positivity Project Family Resources in her Family Liaison Corner.

Coming Up Soon…

October 17-21 - National School Bus Safety Week. More information about this initiative will be in next week’s edition.

Your Proud Cameron Counselors,

Mrs. Bohnert and Mrs. Heath

Healthy Snacks

“Life is a combination of magic and snacks”

Dear Families,

Let’s talk about healthy snacks, the one that are good for your kids. Snack time is a great opportunity to sneak some extra nutrients into your child’s diet. Instead of highly processed snack foods with high sugar and carbs, fill your child’s tummy with whole foods that will provide energy and nutrition. Here is a list of kid-friendly snacks that are both healthy and delicious. Please check this list and feel free to use these suggestions when you send snacks from home for your child(ren).

Yogurt is an excellent snack for kids because it’s a good source of protein and calcium. Calcium is especially important for kids’ developing bones. Some yogurts also contain live bacteria, which benefit the digestive system.

Celery with peanut butter and raisins sometimes called “ants on a log,” is a fun way to get your child to eat a vegetable. Cut a stalk of celery into three or four pieces, spread peanut butter inside the celery, and arrange a few raisins on top of the peanut butter.

Nuts As long as your child is not allergic to nuts or the classroom is not “nuts free”, nuts are high in healthy fats, along with fiber and antioxidants. Dietary fat is important for supporting growth. Doctors used to recommend withholding nuts from children due to the risk of an allergic reaction, but more recent evidence suggests that introducing nuts at an early age lowers this risk.

Trail mix As long as your child is not allergic to nuts or the classroom is not “nuts free”, trail mix is a healthy snack for kids to eat on the go. Most commercial trail mixes contain chocolate candies, which are high in sugar, but you can easily make your own at home. For a healthier version, mix nuts with dried fruit or a whole-grain cereal.

A piece of cheese Cheese is mostly made up of protein and fat and is a good source of calcium. Studies show that eating cheese and other dairy products is linked to better overall diet quality. Full-fat dairy foods significantly contribute to a child’s nutritional requirements for calcium, magnesium, and vitamins A and D

Banana oat cookies Homemade banana cookies are a healthy snack for kids that tastes like a treat. These cookies get their sweetness from mashed bananas rather than refined sugar. Refined sugars are associated with health problems in children, such as an increased risk of heart disease, childhood obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Pickles are cucumbers that have been fermented in salt and water. They’re a god source of vitamin K, and some products also contain probiotics and good bacteria, which are good for the digestive system

Carrot sticks and hummus Most kids love dip and providing them with a healthy dip is a great way to get them to eat their veggies. Hummus is one option. It’s a thick, creamy spread made from chickpeas, which contain fiber, folate, and plenty of antioxidants.

A piece of fruit All fruit is a convenient and healthy snack for kids. Most fruits contain fiber and important nutrients like potassium and vitamins A and C. Bananas, apples, pears, grapes, peaches, and plums are examples of fruits that can be used for grab-and-go snacks.

Apples and peanut butter dip Apple slices and peanut butter are a delicious combination. The skin of an apple contains pectin, a soluble fiber that feeds friendly gut bacteria and improves digestive. Peanut butter has a thick consistency, which may be difficult for kids to use as a dip.
