MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Most of our 7th graders walked down to Difficult Run and Snake’s Den for the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience. The Reston Association supported the hands-on learning, and our science 7 teachers organized and supervised the experience for our students. It was a wonderful week for learning in nature! See some fun pictures below.

Also from the South Lakes Athletic Department: Tonight, the South Lakes High School football game will kick off at 6:00 p.m. in anticipation of the weather. Please note that middle and elementary students must now be accompanied by an adult who supervises them for the duration of the event. If your student attempts to attend without at least one adult, they will be turned away at the ticket booth. Also, there are no backpacks/food/drink/athletic equipment allowed in the stadium. We love when Hughes Panthers attend our games, and hope they are good representatives of our community. Lastly, at the conclusion of the game, all spectators are expected to leave South Lakes in a timely fashion.

We wish our South Lakes Seahawks much success against Lake Braddock tonight!

Congratulations to Our Summer FCPS CARES Winners

FCPS CARES is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. Six winners were selected for July and August.

One of the winners is Maggie Endler, a physical education teacher from Hughes Middle School. A parent shared that her daughter had an injury the first week of school. The parent notified Ms. Endler, who took her daughter aside to discuss ways she could modify the class with her in mind. “She made sure to not embarrass her in front of the other students,” the parent said. “My daughter felt cared for and that individuals matter to teachers in her school!"

ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell an Adult) Program and Wellness Screening

On October 25th and 26th our clinical support team will be introducing a county-approved wellness screening curriculum to our 7th grade students during health and PE classes The goals of this program are to educate students on the signs and symptoms of depression, to let students know what to do if they have concerns about themselves or a peer, and to connect students who may need support with resources inside and outside of our school.   During the program, students will watch a video which will help students to identify signs of depression and distress in themselves and others, as well as what to do if they, or someone they know, are experiencing these symptoms. Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk. Students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.  We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. Parents can also view video resources here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5e27-ocGBHqSSvbIIL9-1Ibr8gutAe5k If you would like your child to Opt Out or would like more information, please contact our school psychologist, Miranda Carlson at mcarlson@fcps.edu.

Programa ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell an Adult) y Evaluación de Bienestar

Young Entrepreneurs: Sports, Music, Fashion and more

Thursdays 3:30-4:30

This weekly after-school activity is for boys and girls who may be interested in learning more about business and entrepreneurship, using sports, fashion and music as the primary topics to engage students. Interactive, workshop style sessions would be led by guest speakers from the community with business experience and supported by high school student volunteers who participate in clubs or coursework that focus on similar topics (entrepreneurship, athletic leadership, fashion / ‘merch’ and music recording).

Helping students understand how to connect the dots between whatever they are passionate about and entrepreneurial / business opportunities in the future is a target learning objective for this program. Participants can also learn about the clubs and courses available in high school where they can learn more, build their network, and get involved in extra-curricular activities
