7th graders spent this week learning about experimental design

Franklin Families and Students,

We hope that you have had a wonderful week! Our students and staff continue to engage in exciting learning opportunities each day as they build on the positive momentum from the start of the school year. Monday is a student holiday and our staff will be using this time to engage in professional development opportunities. We will be reconnecting with the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate, exploring strategies that provide access to rigor for all students, and beginning our journey with Presentations of Learning.

It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of September, which means we are about a month away from the end of the 1st quarter. I encourage all of our families to take some time in the coming weeks to connect with your student about what they are working on in their classes. This is also a good opportunity to take a look at their progress so far this quarter, which can be viewed in SIS ParentVue/StudentVue. If you are interested in receiving weekly progress reports to stay informed about how your child is doing in their classes, please click here for more information and to sign up. You are encouraged to reach out to your child’s teacher or counselor if you have questions about a specific assignment or class.

Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for our first PTA meeting last night. If you were unable to attend, a recording of the meeting is available here. We are grateful for your continued support of the Franklin PTA.

During the first few weeks of the school year, I have enjoyed hearing from so many of our families. Always feel free to contact me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu with questions, feedback, and suggestions.

Enjoy the beautiful Fall weather this weekend!

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Virginia Growth Assessment Fall Testing Dates

In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly introduced the expectation for new state "through-year" assessments in elementary and middle schools. Beginning in 2022-23, students in grades 3-8 take the Virginia Growth Assessment in fall and winter. The purpose of these assessments is to measure student growth and progress in reading and mathematics content standards.

Please note that the Math assessment is NOT given to students taking a high school credit course, so Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra II students will not be assessed. All students take the Reading VGA.Please click here for more information about Virginia Growth Assessments.

Fall VGA Testing Dates

Math: Wednesday, September 28

Reading: Thursday, September 29

Each assessment will take place at the beginning of the day.

Please make sure that your child brings a fully-charged laptop on these days. If at all possible, please avoid making appointments for which your child would need to be absent on these days.

Franklin MS After School Program Information

We enjoyed a great first week of the after-school program. It’s never too late for your child to join. If your child plans to attend an after-school activity, you must complete the Registration Form (required for all Franklin students). Most activities are drop in and your child will not need to sign up for in advance. We have late buses Mondays – Thursdays. Check out the club descriptions along with our two week calendar. Clubs are added throughout the school year so students should check schoology and the cafeteria bulletin boards for updated and added club information. For questions regarding the After-School Program, please email Mrs. Mollé.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Fall Screening

For students NEW to FCPS since January 2022

Parents or guardians of seventh grade students may initiate the full-time AAP Level IV screening process by completing and submitting an Advanced Academic Programs Level IV Referral Form and any optional screening materials to their child’s school counselor no later than Friday, October 14, 2022.

AAP Level IV services are available to students in grades 3-8. Students may be found eligible for full-time placement in AAP Level IV Center classes through a central selection process where multiple criteria are reviewed by a central selection committee to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. More information about the screening process as well as an overview of AAP services available at the middle school level may be found here.

If you have any questions about this process please reach out to your child’s counselor or Franklin’s Advanced Academics Resource Coach, Meg Dombro, at MDDombro@fcps.edu.
