1. From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of the Chantilly HS Community:
Yesterday was the first official day of fall, and the weather changed right on que. I attended the JV football last night, and the cooler breeze reminded me of the first time I experienced a fall season as a freshman in college (I grew up in Miami, Florida).
During the last PTSA meeting, a number of parents asked me about how they can learn more about Chantilly’s many clubs and student organizations. CHS offers over 100 options to choose from, and new clubs are being created all the time just as others decline in popularity and close. One of our Assistant Director of Student Activities, Ms. Carmen Wise, put together the following video to help parents understand how they can access the most up-to-date information about our extracurricular opportunities: https://youtu.be/adr_ovmwxlA
Have a good weekend,
Scott

3. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Needs Tutors
The AVID College Readiness System is designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education and in their lives beyond high school. Many AVID students will be first-generation college students.
Chantilly AVID tutors work with small groups of approximately 5-7 high school students during the school day in an academic elective class called Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). The class is led by a trained teacher and may include 2-4 tutorial groups (depending on class size). These groups use higher order questioning strategies to help students develop a variety of college preparatory skills such as critical thinking and problem solving.
Tutors may work 1 to 25 hours per week, depending on tutor availability and openings in select Fairfax County Public Schools. They earn $18.42 per hour. The current Chantilly needs are for tutors who can work from 8:50-9:40 three days per week with additional opportunities at other schools if interested. Candidates must be currently enrolled in college or be college graduates. Candidates should be willing to serve as positive role models for high school students. Comfort with higher-level math is especially needed, though not required.
Finally, tutors must have reliable transportation as most of our schools are not accessible using public transport.
Interested applicants should contact Karen Molloy, AVID Coordinator, at kcmolloy@fcps.edu for specific information for this school year.
4. Calendar Reminders

6. Recent Student Successes
This is the next installment for the school year of what will become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students. I plan to meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.
