MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Our students completed their Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) in Reading and Math 7 or 8. The results will be analyzed by the teachers to focus our instruction on areas of need for our students. We appreciate your support of these tests and the schoolwork that will prepare our students to be strong readers and mathematicians. Our intervention programs are Lexia and Mathspace. You can encourage your student to complete modules at home when they have some down time.

Next week our science 7 students will enjoy a walking fieldtrip to a watershed. The weather looks glorious. If you are able, please consider chaperoning for a half day. Details are below.

Social-Emotional Learning with Second Step

We will continue our unit on Mindsets and Goals in October.  Our next lesson, on October 3, is Identifying Roadblocks.  Your child will identify and distinguish between internal and external obstacles (or “roadblocks”) that can get in their way when working toward goals. Family conversation starter: Tell your child about a roadblock you encountered when you were working toward a goal, and if you had control over the roadblock.

If you have any questions about Second Step Middle School, please reach out to your student’s school counselor.  Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community

 SEL Screener

Students will take the Social Emotional Learning Screener on Friday, October 21 during Connections class (4th period).  By offering the SEL Screener and seeking to understand how students feel about themselves, we are valuing students’ voices and honoring their input as they develop critical skills.  Click here to learn more about the SEL Screener.  Students took home an SEL Notification Letter and Opt-Out form.  Click here to view that SEL Notification Letter and Opt-Out Form.  If you would like to opt your student out of the screener, please complete the form and return to Marissa Brooks

Chaperones needed! Our 7th graders are scheduled to participate in a fun, hands-on science field trip Weds-Thurs, Sep 28-29. Chaperones are needed to escort students to stations set up down by Glade Stream/Snakeden Branch (behind South Lakes High School) and to move them between stations manned by professional scientists and naturalist from U.S. Geological Survey and Reston Association. We are running unusually short on volunteers this year.  Our most desperate need is for the following sessions: (1) Weds Sep 28 session (7:15-10:45am), (2) Weds Sep 28 afternoon session (10:30-2:15pm), and (3) Thurs Sep 29 afternoon session (10:30-2:15pm).  Please consider supporting our school and community by enabling us to offer our students this unique opportunity to engage in real world science guided by real world scientists .... You may even learn something yourself!  (NOTE: Chaperones will need to be able to walk ~1mile round trip and handle low hills.)

To volunteer or obtain more information, contact Jeanette Thomas at sjthomas1@fcps.edu

Young Entrepreneurs: Sports, Music, Fashion and more

Thursdays 3:30-4:30

This weekly after-school activity is for boys and girls who may be interested in learning more about business and entrepreneurship, using sports, fashion and music as the primary topics to engage students. Interactive, workshop style sessions would be led by guest speakers from the community with business experience and supported by high school student volunteers who participate in clubs or coursework that focus on similar topics (entrepreneurship, athletic leadership, fashion / ‘merch’ and music recording).

Helping students understand how to connect the dots between whatever they are passionate about and entrepreneurial / business opportunities in the future is a target learning objective for this program. Participants can also learn about the clubs and courses available in high school where they can learn more, build their network, and get involved in extra-curricular activities
