Dear Shrevewood Families,

It is hard to believe that we are finishing the fifth week of school and are almost to October! There are not enough words to share our gratitude for how hard the Shrevewood staff are working to provide meaningful learning opportunities for our students each day. The smiles on the faces of our students say it best!

Thank you to all of our parents who attended our PTA meeting and ESOL Parent Coffee this week. We value our parent partnerships and really enjoyed seeing you all at these events.

Please remember that Monday (9/26) is a student holiday/professional workday for teachers. Monday is also Rosh Hashanah, the second day of the two-day celebration of the Jewish New Year. For those celebrating Rosh Hashana, Shanah Tovah!

Have an amazing weekend!

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Math Website for Families

Here is a website Building on Math Strategies with Families that support math work at home. The site offers routines, tasks and games by standard. They are engaging and reinforce students’ strengths and understanding by having math conversations (math talks) while building fact fluency. Here are also some things to remember about math:

The Six DO’s for Families and Their Math Students

  1. Be positive
  2. Link mathematics with daily life
  3. Make mathematics fun
  4. Learn about mathematics-related careers
  5. Have high expectations for your students
  6. Support homework/practice — don’t do it!

Positivity Project

p2

This past week, our school community focused in our Positivity Project morning meetings on Open-Mindedness. Open-Minded individuals like to consider new ideas and try new things. They examine things from all sides and don't jump to conclusions.

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.

Please email our Assistant Principal, Katie Vandawalker, at kmvandawalke@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Kiss & Ride Registration and Procedures

ksr

In order to streamline our Kiss and Ride process, you must register your child(ren) so that you are assigned a kiss and ride number.

Once you register, you will receive a laminated number to display in the front window of your car and your child(ren) will receive a number for their backpacks. We will use the numbers at dismissal in order for students to be dismissed when their ride arrives. Each family only needs to fill out the registration one time.

Thank you so much for your help in ensuring a safe, smooth, and speedy dismissal for all Shrevewood students!

Below are our general guidelines for entering Kiss & Ride safely and respectfully:

  1. Students need to be able to enter and exit the vehicle from the passenger side (right) of the vehicle.  It is not safe to have children walk around to the driver side.
  2. Parents/Guardians are requested to remain in the vehicle as school staff will open doors.
  3. Students cannot load or unload outside of the Kiss & Ride lane that is marked with orange cones.
  4. Please be patient in the first few weeks, as logistics with student numbers may lend to longer wait times.

Breakfast & Lunch Reminders

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast and lunch are NO longer provided at no cost.  Breakfast will be $1.75.  Lunch will be $3.25, milk $0.60. Breakfast and lunch will be served beginning the first day of school.  Money can be added to your child(ren)’s accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com.  You can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://fcps.nutrislice.com/menu/shrevewood-elementary.

Free and Reduced-Price Status

Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September.  A new application must be filled out each new school year and forms are available online now: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/food-and-nutrition-programs/free-and-reduced-price-meals.  Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September. Call (703) 813-4800 if you need help. This must be completed for eligible students to receive free meals.

Attendance

As a reminder, school begins at 9:20 am and ends at 4:05 pm. Please notify us if your child will be absent or late to school.  We will have an automated “call-out” at approximately 11 am. for students who were absent without prior notification.
