Emergency Kits are an Essential Part of Being Prepared

pic

Emergency kits of various types are essential resources in an emergency. These include kits for sheltering-in-place at home, evacuating (known as a go-bag), and for keeping in your vehicle(s). Emergency kits include basic supplies and are tailored to every person’s need.

You will need additional supplies if your household has children, older adults, individuals with access and functional needs, or pets. Kits should be stored in useful, accessible locations and be easily transportable. Fairfax County recommends every household keep three to five day’s worth of food, water and supplies in their kits for each member of the household.

You can use the Emergency Kit Checklist in the Community Emergency Response Guide (last page) to help you build your kit!

Learn the History of the First African Americans Who Became Congressmen Following the American Civil War Sept. 24 at the Vienna Community Center

From Enslavement to Statesmen (presented in partnership with the Vienna Community Center)

Kenya J. Finley-Jean, Supervisory Park Ranger, Civil War Defenses of Washington, will share insights from the National Park Service.

For a few years between Reconstruction and the beginning of the Jim Crow era, African Americans rode a wave of reform to some of the most important political offices in the land. Roughly 2,000 Blacks took office on the state, local and federal level, and nearly a dozen former slaves served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. These trailblazers faced mistreatment and intimidation from both the public and their fellow lawmakers, but they also served as some of the nation’s most prominent advocates of racial equality. From a former manservant to a little-known Civil War veteran, meet five men who rose up from slavery to become part of the United States’ first generation of Black congressmen.  Adults. Teens. School-age children.
