LJMS Updates September 7, 2022

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you were able to enjoy the Labor Day weekend with family and friends.  Overall, we have had a great start to the school year.  Students have transitioned well back to school after their summer break and the teachers are working hard to ensure that all students receive an A+ education each day.  I appreciate all the support you provide to the staff by keeping your students focused on education.  That makes a big difference in how the students relate to one another and to the Luther Jackson staff.

Back-to-School Night is scheduled for Wednesday, September 14th and the teachers look forward to meeting you and speaking about the wonderful activities they are doing this school year.  For our BTSN event, we are offering an in-person event AND an asynchronous option that will be available on our website on that Wednesday, September 14.  Parents/guardians will follow the traditional in-person model of attending a student’s schedule for all classes and asynchronous information will be available on our website.

Here is the 9/14  BTSN in – person schedule:

We hope everybody will have the opportunity to meet the student’s teachers either in person or asynchronous from the school’s website.

The selection process of Luther Jackson Middle School’s new principal is moving forward, and an announcement will be made when the nomination is finalized.  There will be opportunities for staff and parents to meet the new principal after the announcement has been made.

Kiss and Ride

Please do not drop or pick up students not designated as Kiss and Ride locations (school front sidewalk).  Luther Jackson is located in a metro area and the roads are busy.  Having students cross Gallows Road and other streets surrounding the school is extremely dangerous and we want to keep our students safe.  Thank you for your adherence to this policy.

Thank you again for your continued support and we will see you at Back-to-School Night on

September 14th.

August Frattali

Interim Principal

Apply for Free & Reduced Meals

All students will have to pay for breakfast and lunch this 22-23 school year unless they qualify for free and reduced meals.

Families will need to apply for free and reduced-price meals, which they have not had to do since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

  • Online applications are now available.
  • If you applied and were found eligible to receive FRM last school year, your eligibility will expire on Oct. 9, 2022.  Please reapply for this school year!
  • Approved FRM eligibility letters may also be used to provide additional benefits.
  • Please know that we will not share your data or personal information with anyone else. See FCPS’ Trust Policy.

When applying for FRM, don't forget to complete the "Consent to Share"

The Consent to Share Information Letter informs parents that their children may be eligible to participate in several fee-based programs (art, music, Family & Consumer Sciences, etc.) at either no cost or a reduced cost, if they participate in the Free and Reduced-price meals program, and provide a consent to share information form.

Some students are directly certified (i.e. Medicaid recipients) as receiving Free and Reduced-Price Meals. Even though they do not need to submit a Free and Reduced-Price Meals application, they will need to submit the Consent to Share Information form to be eligible for additional benefits.

The FRM application also includes a section with the Consent to Share information for other programs. If section four of the application is completed, the Consent to Share Information form does not need to be filled out.

Students Rights and Responsibility Reminder

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the following message:

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please contact us if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.
