Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

We have had an awesome third week of school!  Students are quickly settling into routines and our classrooms are full of learning, laughter, and joy!

Last Thursday our PTA kicked off their annual Help the Hive fundraiser, thank you to all who have already donated.  This is the PTA’s major fundraiser for the year and the funds help Stenwood offer many fun activities to our students families.  One of the awesome events is the Ice Cream Social!  We hope to see many of our families next Friday at the Ice Cream Social.  If you have not had a chance to RSVP, please see the Wednesday Mail from the PTA.

In case you missed it, on Tuesday we sent out a special welcome to Tracey Brown Rice, she is a current assistant principal on loan to us from Timber Lane and will be here until late October when Dr. Mitchell returns.

Shifts in Reading Instruction and Assessment

Join us for a Virtual Parent Coffee at 9:30am on September 13th, our Reading Specialist will share the shifts in Reading instruction in FCPS.  She will also share updates regarding the new assessments that will be used in alignment with the shifts.  Many of you are familiar with the DRA2 levels, that assessment has been replaced with a variety of assessment tools to measure literacy performance.  A Zoom link will be sent out the day before, we will record the session for anyone who is not able to attend.

Digital Citizenship is using technology responsibly, appropriately and making good choices when using it.  There are 6 components: Media Balance & Well-Being, Privacy & Security, Digital Footprint & Identity, Relationships & Communication, Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech and News & Media Literacy.

Every week, we’ll have a Supporting Your Child in a Digital World section with information, tips and resources to support families. Learn more about how FCPS implements Digital Citizenship and supports for families and students on the FCPS Digital Citizenship web page.

Positivity Project: Open-Mindedness

PP Picture Logo

This week, we are focusing on Open-Mindedness. You like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.

“Progress is impossible without change; those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

                    ~George Bernard Shaw

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • What does your attitude have to do with being open-minded?
  • How is jumping to conclusions being closed-minded? Why might that be a negative in building relationships?
  • How open-minded do you think you are?
