Safety Drills During the School Year
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.
The first lockdown drill of the school year will take place on Friday, September 9. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.
Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Here are some helpful tips for families to use to support their students before and after school lockdown drills.
Working together, we create a safe, secure environment for students to learn and grow in our schools.

Join the PTA*
*You don’t have to come to meetings, we promise!
Weyanoke Elementary PTA is made up of a PTA Board and General members. The Board is a handful of parents who organize and run projects.
NEW BENEFIT THIS YEAR! Join and you will get access to the online student school directory. Help you students reach out to their classmates and make communicating with other parents easier!
PTA General Members are individuals and families who make an annual donation. That’s it! $10 or $15 and you’re done. Your donation will support EVERY Weyanoke student, and you will be under no obligation to contribute any time at the school.
If you do want to help, just check the box YES, I WANT TO VOLUNTEER on the membership form and you will be added to our volunteer list. When opportunities arise throughout the school year, we will be in touch in advance and at that point you can sign up or pass, entirely up to you for each event.
Two ways the PTA helps make Weyanoke Elementary School better:
-
We Raise Money. Hosting fundraisers like Fun Run, International Night, and Chucky-E-Cheese Night. This money funds activities, assemblies, field trips and more.
-
We Show Up. The Board and Volunteers help with school activities throughout the year that show appreciation to our teachers and staff and give our kids a chance to have fun and make wonderful memories.
We know a parent’s most precious commodity is time, we don’t want to waste yours. Help the school by donating with your GENERAL MEMBERSHIP. If you want to volunteer from time to time, please check the box on the form.
