Principal's Message

Dear Mustang Community-

CONGRATULATIONS on finishing the second week of school! As a reward to all Mustangs (students, staff and families) for their hard work, let’s have a four day weekend in honor of Labor Day! Hopefully all Mustangs will take advantage of the beautiful weather, re-charge their batteries, and celebrate the successful start to the school year.

As students begin to get more engaged in school, please remind them to talk to you, their counselor, or one of the administrators if there is something going on that is concerning them. School staff can only address issues and concerns if we know about them! We need to keep the lines of communication open with our students and work to make the learning environment safe and accessible for ALL Mustangs.

Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Peter Kownacki

Principal

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow! The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance web page for tips and strategies.

SR&R

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Parent/Guardian Signature

Parents/guardians are required to sign the SR&R annually.  You can download and digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement in ParentVUE.  Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will be prompted to digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement upon login until the acknowledgement has been signed.  The name in the digital signature box must match the parent’s or guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

While use of ParentVUE to digitally sign the SR&R acknowledgement is preferred, parents/guardians may elect to download and print the SR&R Parent/Guardian Signature Sheet   from the FCPS public website.  If a you need assistance accessing the signature sheet, you may contact the main office and ask us to print a form for you to sign. The SR&R Parent/Guardian Signature Sheet is due September 30, 2022

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

The Health Information Form (HIF) (SS/SE -71) Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) Emergency Care Information provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

For SY 22-23, these forms will be required for all students. Parents/guardians may submit these forms through electronic submission accessed within the weCare@school (weCare) module in SIS.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Middle School (7-8).  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Middle School (7-8). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your Mustang’s PE teacher or the FLE Administrator, Miranda Hendershot, mehendershot@fcps.edu or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu.
