Labor Day

labor day

Friday, Sept, 2, and Monday, Sept. 5, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Positivity Project Intro Week: Other People Mindset!

P2

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset. This means anything that builds relationships is going to make you happy.

The mission of the Positivity Project is to empower America’s youth to build positive relationships by understanding, appreciating, and exemplifying the character strengths in us all. People who have strong positive relationships do five things consistently - these are the five practices of the Other People Mindset.

  1. Recognize the good in other people
  2. Recognize that everything you say or do affects other people
  3. Support others when they struggle
  4. Cheer people on when they succeed
  5. Remain present when giving people your attention. People who have a strong Other People Mindset are able to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with others.

While mental health is incredibly complex, we do know that positive relationships can help people become happier, healthier, and more resilient. And, the Positivity Project believes that educators have a huge opportunity and vital role to play in this endeavor. Our nation’s youth spends a large percentage of their time in school. By deliberately and consistently teaching students that relationships are important -- and that positive relationships are cultivated through character and the Other People Mindset -- educators can roll back these trends and create strong citizens and leaders for our communities and countries.

Join our Team!

We are looking for a Public Health Attendant (PHA) to join our team!  A PHA assists special education teachers with the daily care of students with disabilities and assists with designated special education classes.  Qualifications include the ability to follow and repeat basic oral and written instructions; concern for the well-being of and desire to provide care to students with disabilities; ability to maintain effective relationships with fellow workers and special education pupils; and sufficient strength, dexterity, and mobility to lift, or assist with lifting students, to push and/or position wheelchairs.  For more information, please contact Jackie White, Assistant Principal, at 703-914-6900.

Dozens of families told us that you wanted the PTA to support a family picnic, and so the PTA is very happy to offer a special dessert treat to families that attend the upcoming Parklawn Family Picnic on September 9! The PTA can provide this treat, and offer other activities throughout the year, thanks to the support of our PTA members. Please consider joining the PTA during our membership drive this month. Membership dues are $10 for an individual adult and $15 for a family (more than 1 adult) for the entire school year. When you submit your membership form (in paper or online), please include the grade(s) of your student(s) to earn a point for that grade.
