MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Parents and Caregivers,

Last week we hosted the parents for an in house Back to School Night.  If you were unable to attend or visit a classroom please access our videos here:  2022-2023 Back-to-School Night Site  NOTE: You MUST login with your child’s FCPS Google Account to access.

This week the South Lakes pyramid schools hosted the Superintendent, Michelle Reid.  She answered questions and heard comments.  She afterwards noted that she has not had a meeting like ours with so much support.  Indeed, we are blessed to work alongside parents and community members that have one goal in mind, to see the Reston students succeed in school and life.  If you were unable to join us, please consider attending another Superintendent Community Conversation at one of the other high schools. Visit FCPS’ website for details. https://www.fcps.edu/blog/superintendent-community-conversations

Social-Emotional Learning with Second Step

Next week we will continue our unit on Mindsets and Goals.  Students will learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.  Our next lesson, on September 12, is Creating New Pathways in Your Brain.  Students will learn that intelligence is not fixed; their brain actually makes new connections and their skills and abilities develop when they practice difficult things.  Family conversation starter: Tell your child about a time you had to learn something challenging and explain how you persisted in learning it. Ask your child if there’s anything they would like to learn to do this year.

If you have any questions about Second Step Middle School, please reach out to your student’s school counselor.  Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community

Young Entrepreneurs: Sports, Music, Fashion and more

Thursdays 3:30-4:30

This weekly after-school activity is for boys and girls who may be interested in learning more about business and entrepreneurship, using sports, fashion and music as the primary topics to engage students. Interactive, workshop style sessions would be led by guest speakers from the community with business experience and supported by high school student volunteers who participate in clubs or coursework that focus on similar topics (entrepreneurship, athletic leadership, fashion / ‘merch’ and music recording).

Helping students understand how to connect the dots between whatever they are passionate about and entrepreneurial / business opportunities in the future is a target learning objective for this program. Participants can also learn about the clubs and courses available in high school where they can learn more, build their network, and get involved in extra-curricular activities

Herndon Reston Youth Field Hockey has open registration for players in grades 7 through 9. Most Langston Hughes players will be placed on the same teams. Practices and most games will be at Herndon High School during September and October. Register at www.hryfh.org.

We are extremely happy to have your child in our school with us this year!

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the following message:

sr

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.
