From the Principal’s Pen
Dear Laurel Hill Families,
Thank you for sharing your children with us, it has been a great start to the school year! We appreciate parent support in arriving to school at 9:05 am, staying in your car in the kiss and ride line, and driving safely in the parking lot. We are only allowed to have students exit and enter vehicles on the far side of the cross walk. Thank you for your patience as we work to keep all staff and students safe.
We would like to offer reminders regarding dismissal. Please send your children home the same way as often as possible. If you must change routes, please notify the teacher through email or phone call. Messages through students are not effective. Early dismissal is closed after 3:30 each day. If you need to check your student out early it has to be prior to 3:30 pm. We have to safely navigate dismissal for 800 students and this practice helps.
Please safely enjoy the four-day weekend.
Sincerely,
Janice Dalton, Principal
Addison Smith, Assistant Principal
Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal

School safety drills
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance. The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill. Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Here are some helpful tips for families to use to support their students before and after school lockdown drills. Working together, we create a safe, secure environment for students to learn and grow in our schools.

SR&R updates
FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.
Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.
Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.
Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.
Please contact us if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.
Testing updates…
Students in grades 1-6 will participate in iReady in reading and math prior to September 30, 2022. Please access the parent notifications letter at this link: iReady Universal Screener Parent Notification public webpage. Teachers will communicate specific dates for your child.
Want to see your student for lunch?
We would like to provide parents the opportunity to eat lunch with their children. This will take place after Labor Day and with limitations. To keep in line with our safety and COVID protocols, and weather permitting, parents are welcome to check their child out for lunch and sit at our picnic tables. We will take a hiatus/pause once the weather changes and then reconvene in the spring.
