Dear Poplar Tree Families,
We had a great third week of the school year and it was great seeing many families virtually at our PTA meeting last night! Please see below for some important information.

Lockdown Drill Information and Notification
Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.
A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.
We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.
Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.
Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.
Student PM Pick-up
If you need to pick your child up early from school, please notify the PTES main office by sending an email to PoplarTreeElem.Attendance@fcps.edu.
We also ask that you pickup your child no later than 3:00 PM. After 3:00, we will ask you to wait for our regular dismissal. Dismissal is a busy time and this helps ensure that all student remain safe. Thank you for your help!

Save the Date! Please join Mrs. Majkowski and Mrs. Keleher on Thursday, September 22 at 9:00 for a parent meeting. Mrs. Keleher will be explaining about Advanced Academics and the different levels of service. Mrs. Majkowski will be giving a brief overview on the Science of Reading.

VGA Testing Information Grades 3-6
We will be administering the Virginia Growth Assessment on the following dates this fall. Please try to avoid absences on these dates. Further information about the assessment will go home in next week’s Friday folder with a form that must be returned by all parents. Before & After School Programs
The Poplar Tree PTA serves as a sponsor for before/after school programs at PTES! These programs are facilitated by parent volunteers and vendors. You must be a PTA member to participate in the programs. This year we are proud to be offering:

- We are continuing the before-school Running/Walking Club for all students grades 1-6. If a Kindergartener wants to join, please have a parent come and run or walk too. Best of all, it’s FREE! We meet from 7:45 to 8:20 AM Thursday mornings starting September 29th - December 2nd.

- Club members will participate in practice tests and worksheets and will come to the school for contests like Math Olympiad, Noetic, Math Kangaroo and Math Counts etc. For Grades 3-6. Meets on Tuesdays between 6-8PM beginning in October.

- The PTES Chess Club meets Fridays, 3:30 – 5:00 pm from September 23 – January 20. Everyone in grades 2 - 6 interested in learning and playing chess is welcome, beginners and advanced players! Players are grouped by ability, not age. We teach the rules to beginners and strategy to experienced players.
