PBIS Caring Culture

Dear Eagles Families,

All FCPS schools are tasked with creating a  School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP) to improve student outcomes. Schools create goals around Achievement, Access, and Wellness. All SIIP plans are made public on the school’s webpage once finalized. At KJMS, we gather wellness data through a number of school and county surveys.

In September, we will ask students to complete a survey about our school environment. Since we know that both students and staff create and contribute to our school’s environment, we collaborated (or had a collab sesh as the kids say) we AVID 8 students to create a student-centered survey. Our hope is the students will give us feedback to help ensure the school climate is welcoming and optimistic. We ask questions about student and teacher behaviors that are focused on the SOAR Traits and CASEL Classroom Signature Practices. We repeat this survey in the Winter and Spring to identify areas of improvement and measure success. Please click on the link below  to preview the survey.  If you would like to opt your student out of this school survey, please use this form.

Caring Culture Parent Preview

In addition, FCPS administers the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Survey to all students and the SOS Signs of Suicide Screener to select grade levels. KJMS will share more information about both in upcoming communications including preview materials and opt out information.

Have a wonderful long Labor Day weekend!

Sincerely,

Kathryn Crump Teague,

Director of Student Services

Upcoming Lockdown Drill

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Emergency Care Updates in SIS ParentVUE

Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring that the climate in all FCPS facilities is safe and secure. In support of this goal, FCPS provides weCare@school (weCare), an emergency care information system, available to FCPS parents and guardians who have registered for their own Parent account.

weCare helps manage emergency medical information by enabling parents to go online to enter and update their children’s medical data at their convenience. Contact information provided automatically enrolls parents to receive eNotify communications from the district and their child’s school. eNotify is the communications tool for FCPS emergency, transportation, attendance, weather closings and delays, and essential outreach messages. Messages are sent via email and text messages. Occasional phone messages are sent as well.

Screen Activity Report for Parents

Parents can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, which will provide a list of the top sites the child visited that week.

The weekly Parent Report offers parents the ability to self-sign-up to the free Internet Use Parent Portal. Parents who sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal can log-in any time to see a little more detail about their child’s internet browsing. The portal also offers the parent added ability to “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours on the FCPS device.
