Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

Last week was a wonderful first week of school!  Many staff members agreed that it was a very positive and peaceful week.  Much time was spent getting to know one another, establishing routines and diving into instruction.  We are excited to begin our second week together.

We enjoyed seeing many of you at the Madison HS County Fair last Friday.  It was a fun evening for all; connecting with one another and those from other schools in our region was a great way to start the new school year.  Thank you for coming!

Please join us for Back to School Night on Thursday, September 8, 2022.

K-1: 5:00-5:45 pm

2-3: 6:00-6:45 pm

4-6: 7:00-7:45 pm

We invite you to spend time in your child’s classroom, meet their teacher and learn more about the year to come. This evening is for adults only.  We hope to see everyone next Thursday evening.

Dr. Michelle Reid, FCPS superintendent, will host a Community Conversation at Madison HS on September 6th, 6:30-7:30 p.m.  Language interpretation will be provided, as available, as well as child care and light refreshments. If you plan to attend, please register to attend.  We hope to see you there!

There will be no school for students and staff on September 2nd and 5th as we are off for the Labor Day weekend.  We hope you enjoy this extended weekend with your family.

Peace.

Jennifer Heiges, Matt Chapman and Sue Kirby

Health Information Forms and Emergency Care Forms

These forms were sent home in Tuesday Folders last week.  If you have not already returned them, please return the hard copies to the school with your student or submit the Emergency Care Information Form through weCare@school (weCare).

Parent Digital Resources Consent Form

In order to start using our digital tools at Marshall Road right away, we need your help!  Every student must have parental consent BEFORE they can use certain resources, so please complete this online form as soon as possible.  To provide your parental consent for each student in your family, please use this link and follow the provided directions.  This can also be done from your ParentVue account when you log in.  Click here for more information, including the list of digital resources used at Marshall Road.

Students Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ updated Students Rights and Responsibility Booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school.  In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R.  Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R.  Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.  Please contact the main office if you have any questions.

2022-23 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms

This Opt-Out booklet includes opt-out forms that you should submit to your child’s school principal if you do not want your student to participate in a given activity.  If you have no objection to the activities described in this booklet, DO NOT sign or submit any of the forms.

Here Comes the Bus Mobile App

Want to know when your child's bus is approaching your stop?  The Here Comes the Bus® app is a school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving them real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping them get to the bus stop on time.  You can find more details here.

Band and Strings

Attention 4th, 5th and 6th graders: it's not too late to sign up for Band or Strings!  Information can be found on the MRES home page.

Attendance Message

Did you know?

•   Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.

•   Missing 10 percent (or about 2 days per month) can make it harder to learn to read.

•   Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day every few weeks.

•   Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.

•   Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

What you can do

•   Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.

•   Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

•   Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.

•   Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help her transition.

•   Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.

•   If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.

•   Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.

•   Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
