Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon! Thank you for all of the support that helped us get off to a great start to the school year. Our staff and students have collaborated all week as they established warm and welcoming classroom communities, they got the ball rolling on positive relationships and connections, and they started putting in place routines and procedures that will set us all up for success this year. I am very proud of both groups.

I wanted to highlight several opportunities in the coming weeks for you to engage with the Franklin community and show your school spirit. You can find additional information about each of these opportunities at the bottom of this email.

  • Virtual Back to School Night - September 7
  • Community Conversation with FCPS Superintendent Dr. Reid at Chantilly High School - August 31
  • PTA Spirit Wear Sale - Orders Due September 16
  • Asha Joythi 5k Run/Walk - September 18

It was a privilege to have your students back in the building this week and we are excited about the year ahead. At Franklin MS, our students are at the center of all that we do and we will strive to hear every voice and value every strength.

Always feel free to contact me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu if there is anything our team can do to support your student. Best wishes for a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Upcoming Lockdown Drill

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Back to School Night (virtual) on Sept. 7

We hope that you can join us for our Back to School Night event on Wednesday, September 7. This will be a virtual event via Zoom that features a synchronous presentation from the FMS Leadership Team. The link will be sent on September 7, and this session will be recorded and shared with the community if you are unable to join us at 6:00 PM. The session will feature updates about Schoology, Health and Safety Procedures, our Interdisciplinary Teams, After School Activities, and supports that will be in place for your student this year. There will be an opportunity for families to submit questions. We hope that you can join us at this virtual event!

Please save the date for a very special event! Dr. Michelle Reid, FCPS superintendent, will host a Community Conversation on Wednesday, August 31, 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM at Chantilly High School. This event will be a unique opportunity to help Dr. Reid get to know our school community and learn more about her vision for our district.
