First Week Fun at Parklawn!

The first week of school has been full of joy! There were big smiles, excitement, and an energy we all could feel throughout the community! Thank you to all of our Parklawn family members who partnered with us as we navigated new routines in a new school year.

Calendar Reminder! Labor Day Weekend Holiday

reminder

There is no school Friday, September 2 or Monday, September 5 for Labor Day weekend.

Arrival and Dismissal at Parklawn

arrival

Thank you for your patience and flexibility during the first week of school as transportation and school routines were being set in place. With our growing Parklawn family, we ask for your continued partnership in ensuring a safe and smooth arrival and dismissal time. Please check out the notes below:

Kiss and Ride

  • School doors open at 8:20 am. Please do not drop children off earlier than this time, as adult supervision is not available.
  • Please do not drop students off in the parking lot by door one. It is unsafe for students and adults to cross in front of the buses. It also interrupts the flow of our Kiss and Ride Line.
  • Make sure to have your number clearly displayed during pick up.
  • Adults should stay in the car during drop off and pick up.
  • Students should only enter or exit the car on the right side of the car closest to the curb.
  • Drivers should not go around the car in front of them unless directed by Parklawn staff.
  • Be mindful of driveways, entrances and exits off of Braddock Road and do not block these locations while waiting in line.
  • Follow directions of the Parklawn staff to make sure we are not blocking our buses.

Bus Transportation

  • Please be at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled time
  • PreK students and Kindergarten students must be met at the bus stop. PreK students must be met by someone at least 18 years of age. Kindergarteners must be met by someone at least in middle school. Students will be returned to Parklawn if someone is not present. All other grades will be  dismissed from the bus.

Parklawn Family Picnic

To celebrate the new year, join us for our Parklawn family picnic on Friday, September 9! Families can pack their own dinner and blanket and join us outside for a picnic! Weather permitting, we hope to see you there between 5:30-7!

Student Rights and Responsibilities

The 2022-2023 Student Rights and Responsibilities document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable and supportive school environment. We ask that you use this document as a framework for discussing these expectations with your child or teen so that he or she is well prepared for success when the school year begins. You will also find that this publication includes information that you may need throughout the school year, including contact numbers and other resources. This document is available in the following languages: Spanish, ArabicChineseKoreanUrdu, and Vietnamese.

Parent/Guardian Signature Sheet

Please log on to your SIS ParentVue account and sign to acknowledge the review of this document OR sign and return this form to Parklawn by September 30.  A paper copy will also be sent home in the August 30th Tuesday folder.

Please Note Key changes to the document for the 2022-23 school year include:

  • Adding rights to protect citizenship and immigration status from unauthorized sharing.
  • Changes to FCPS’ Acceptable Use Policy Regulation for Technology.
  • A new section on cell phones.

The new section on cell phones prohibits cell phone use in classrooms. We recognize that this new policy will be a shift for many students and families this year, but research shows that managing phone use during class time will support students’ attention and ability to fully engage in their learning. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class.

Elementary Students  must keep phones silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day unless there is a medical need or emergency, or teachers have allowed the usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool. Cell phones may only be used on campus before and after school.
