MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We have had a tremendously successful opening of school!  Students have already begun to acclimate themselves to the bell schedule, the cafeteria procedures, and the dismissal routine. We are excited to see the possibilities of this year with the entire community focused on student success!

On Wednesday, August 31st, we will open our doors to parents for an in-person Back to School Night where you will follow your student’s schedule to hear from their teachers.  First period starts at 6:30p.m., but a PTA meeting will take place at 5:30 in the cafeteria where you will hear from our School Board member, Melanie Meren, and PTA President Jessica McInerney. I will also be available to greet you and answer any questions.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Aimee Monticchio

We have received requests for student lockers. Students may still request a locker using the Locker Request Form 2022-2023 by Friday, September 9th. The locker request form is also available on the Langston Hughes Student All Course in Schoology. Student Services office processes the locker requests and assigns lockers in the first weeks of school. Please keep in mind that if a student requests a locker, the combination may not be shared, and the locker may only be used by the student assigned.

August 29th -September 5th -Counselor Introductions

The counselors will be visiting 7th and 8th grade English classes. Students will be introduced to or reacquainted with their school counselor and learn about the role of the school counselor. Students will also learn about programs run by the counseling staff, available resources, and how to see/communicate with their counselor

Social Emotional Learning with Second Step

We want your child to be successful in school, and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. In order to support academic success, we know that students also need skills for overcoming challenges, making good decisions, handling emotions, and getting along with others.

Next week, we will begin Second Step Middle School, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to help students develop their social-emotional skills, such as emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help students both in and out of school.  Second Step SEL lessons will take place during Connections, every Monday.

We want to partner with families to support Social-Emotional Learning.  Each week you will find a preview of the SEL lesson here in our newsletter.  We will also provide conversation starters to use with your student at home. Families are encouraged to discuss and reinforce these SEL topics.

Our first unit is Mindsets and Goals.  Students will learn how to develop a growth mindset and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.  The lesson on August 29 will introduce your student to Second Step. Your student will identify challenges they might face when starting middle school and identify resources at Langston Hughes where they can get help.  Family conversation starter: Tell your child about something that made you nervous when you started middle school. Ask what makes them nervous and who they can go to for help at school.

If you have any questions about Second Step Middle School, please reach out to your student’s school counselor.  Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community.

COMPLETE the Digital Consent Form for your student to be allowed to use some approved digital tools that still require parent permission.  More information can be found on our website and the form may be completed digitally, no need to sign the paper form which was mailed home in early August.

We are extremely happy to have your child in our school with us this year!

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the following message:

sr

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by September 30, 2022.
