Emotional Health Literacy: Emotional Awareness (In-Person)

pic

This is the second of three mental health literacy seminars led by Shabnam Curtis, certified integral life coach. Parenting, caregiving, having a full-time job, managing finances, and keeping up with social connections successfully requires a lot of self-care and self-awareness. In this series, Ms. Curtis will discuss the skills necessary to live more in harmony and manage our daily stress through learning more about our bodies and emotions.

This particular workshop focuses on emotional health literacy. It will teach how our emotions are made, how we can observe them and listen to their messages, and how we can change our approach to our emotions in a constructive way.

The workshop style is a mix of lecture, short practices, reflection, and sharing experiences with the class.

You may register on this page to attend the in-person session on August 26th at Reston Regional Library.

FDA Finalizes Historic Rule Enabling Access to Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule to improve access to hearing aids which may in turn lower costs for millions of Americans. This action establishes a new category of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, enabling consumers with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment to purchase hearing aids directly from stores or online retailers without the need for a medical exam, prescription or a fitting adjustment by an audiologist.

The rule is expected to lower the cost of hearings aids, furthering the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of expanding access to high-quality health care and lowering health care costs for the American public. It is designed to assure the safety and effectiveness of OTC hearing aids, while fostering innovation and competition in the hearing aid technology marketplace. Close to 30 million adults in the U.S. could benefit from hearing aid use. The more affordable hearing aids could be in stores as soon as mid-October. Read more about this story.

9-8-8 National Hotline Now Available

new 9-8-8 crisis and support hotline is now active across the United States, including here in Fairfax County. In 2020, Congress designated a new 9-8-8 dialing code to operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network (NSPL), which comprises over 200 locally operated and funded crisis lines across the country.

Dialing either 9-8-8 or the existing NSPL number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), will connect you to behavioral health care and support 24 hours a day.

In addition, county services include emergency services (open 24/7) at the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health. You may access emergency services by calling 703-573-5679 or going to 8221 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive in Fairfax.
