Franklin MS Return to School Update - August 19

Franklin Families and Students,

Good morning!

We would like to thank all of the students, parents, and family members who joined us yesterday afternoon at our Welcome Celebration. It was a wonderful event and there was a great energy in the building. This was a powerful way for us to start the year as a school community and establish the critical connections and relationships that will be the foundation to student success.

I would encourage all of you to review the information at the bottom of this message with your student, including the updated FCPS cellphone policy. You will find several important reminders that will help us have a successful first week of the school year.

The most common theme I heard during the Welcome Celebration yesterday was about the positive energy that came from reconnecting with our students. They are the reason we come the FMS every single day and we can’t wait to begin our journey together this year. We are grateful for the trust you place in us as they return to Franklin MS and we take this responsibility very seriously.

Always feel free to contact me directly at dpwright@fcps.edu if you have any questions, concerns, or if there is anything our team can do to support you.

Thank you for all that you have been doing to help your student have a great start to the school year.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Student Rights and Responsibilities Update - Personal Device Away for the Day

An important update made to the Student Rights & Responsibilities document (SR&R) for the coming school year is the regulation to limit cell phone use during the school day for middle school students. Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones, earbuds, smart watches, and other similar devices during the instructional day from 7:30 AM to 2:15 PM. Phones must be silenced and kept away for the duration of the school day. Storage may be in a locker, backpack, pencil bag, etc., during the day.

We recognize this new policy may be a shift for some students and families this year. Schools are partnering with parents to help students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class. Please talk to your child(ren) before the start of the school year about these new expectations. Families are encouraged to review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users.

Expectations will be emphasized with all students during orientation and beginning of school activities. Thank you for your support and partnership.

Transportation Information

As we prepare for children to come to school and go home on buses this fall, we ask you to be aware of possible adjustments to routes and scheduling. Franklin MS will keep you informed of changes as soon as information is available. Your patience and understanding as we make adjustments is appreciated. Franklin MS and FCPS are working hard to address the need for drivers and plan for transportation in a way that has the least impact on students. Find out more about bus routes on the FCPS website and download the Here Comes the Bus mobile app.

Please call the Area 3 Transporation Office at: (703) 249-7000 with questions about transportation for your student or to report late buses.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to review their Parent Vue account in Student Information System (SIS) for updated bus route assignment information before the first day of school on Monday in the event their have been updates or changes.

Student Medication

Parents and guardians of students who are attending Franklin MS need to bring medication to our Health Room. As a reminder, students may not carry medication during the school day. Please click here for information on School Health Services and a link to medication authorization forms. Please contact our School Health Aide, Donna Long, with any questions.

FCPSOn Laptop Distribution

Laptop distribution will occur on Wednesday or Thursday in your student’s PE class. Additionally, student passwords often expire during the summer. All students will reset their passwords when they get their FCPS Laptops during the first week of school.
