MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We enjoyed greeting the community for Open House yesterday, and Monday at 7:30 a.m. the entire staff will welcome our 7th and 8th graders in the gymnasium and begin to orient them to Langston Hughes Middle School.  They will follow a Blue Day schedule that day.

This newsletter is your best source of information on a weekly basis.  It comes out from me every Friday.  Please read through it to find up-to-date announcements, reminders, important dates, and opportunities.

We consider it a privilege to partner with you in raising up the next generation.  It is the most meaningful work on the planet.  Thank you for your support of our work here.  Have a fantastic weekend, and we will see your student Monday!

Students driven to and from school should use the Kiss & Ride area on Ridge Heights Road. Kiss & Ride is open from 7:10 – 7:25 a.m.

Students should be dropped off and picked up on the school side to avoid crossing Ridge Heights Road.

Dropping off or picking up students on Seahawk Drive or the school parking lot is not permitted from 7:00-7:30 a.m.; it creates a traffic jam and causes additional safety problems with the arrival and departure of the school buses and staff.

As with each start of the school year, you are asked to sign to acknowledge your review of the Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R) document.  The new section on cell phones details the policy for middle schools.

Langston Hughes After-School

We’re excited about the beginning of a new school year and can’t wait to start the Hughes After-School Program. This year we will start clubs and activities on Wednesday, September 14th

Please find our welcome letter and the "registration form" link below. We will provide more information about the club schedule and other important information, as we are able.  I’m looking forward to a great school year with our student(s)!

The Langston Hughes After-School program offers a unique, robust, and high-quality clubs/activities for all students.

Our program creates an environment where creativity, enrichment, and inspiration thrive. Here students challenge themselves and work outside their comfort zone to reach their full potential. We encourage students become explorers, scientists, leaders, athletes, and volunteers in the community.

Students can participate in a variety of clubs and activities that include Sports, Team Building Activities, STEM, Academic Support, Social and Emotional Learning, Mentoring and so much more.

The Langston Hughes After-School Program is staffed by teachers, community leaders, and volunteers.

After School clubs run daily until 4:30 p.m. with most taking place on “Late Bus Days” where participants have the option to ride the “Late Bus” home.

This year our Late Bus days are Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Student can locate their late bus number in the Student Vue SIS program.

Students will have the opportunity to electronically sign up for clubs starting the second week of school. The club schedule and descriptions will be posted on the Hughes After- School Schoology group and the School Website.

Parents are welcome to join us. Those who wish to volunteer, help planning events, or assist in any way, please contact Franklin Kyle @ fmkyle1@fcps.edu or 703 715 3784.

The Middle School After-School Program is funded and implemented through a partnership between FCPS and Fairfax County’s Neighborhood and Community Services.
