By completing the digital form linked below, you provide permission for your child to use the FCPS-approved online tools listed below as part of an instructional program.

Listed below are the digital tools that are used at your child’s school that require parental approval, and not all tools will be used by every student. For information about the specific tools that will be used by your child, please contact your child’s teachers. You will be notified if additional tools are added to this list and given the opportunity to opt-in to tools that require parental permission. Additionally, FCPS may use digital tools that do not collect, use or share any personal information.

You can find more information about FCPS’ commitment to student privacy and how resources are vetted at Digital Resources in FCPS.

This permission will expire at the end of this school year, and can be revoked at any time by contacting the school.  If you have questions about any of the digital resources listed below, please contact your child’s school.

Student Bus Route Assignments

Transportation Services emailed student bus route assignments last week. Please note that the provided times are estimates and that buses may be delayed due to weather, traffic conditions, and a national and regional driver shortage.  Please check the Here Comes the Bus app or FCPS School Bus Delays website for potential delays. Students are expected to be at their bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. A double back route assignment may require your bus schedule to be adjusted earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. FCPS will send out a final bus schedule on August 19.

Expunging High School Courses Taken in Middle School (Incoming 9th Graders Only)

Parents of incoming 9th grade students who completed a high school course (World Languages, Algebra, and Geometry) in the 2021-22 school year may request the final grades for these courses be omitted from your student’s transcript.  You must submit a Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School form to South County High School Student Services, after the course is completed and prior to October 21, 2022.  This form may be obtained at the following link https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/is104.pdf

free and rduce

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application Available

Families will need to apply for Free and Reduced-price meals, which they have not had to do since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

  • The application is now available on the webpage.
  • Paper applications will be available at schools (except ones designated as a CEP school) at a date to be determined.
  • Approved FRM eligibility letters may also be used to provide additional benefits.

Please know that we will not share your data or personal information with anyone else. See FCPS’ Trust Policy.

For the past two years, the federal government has provided no-cost meals to all public school students without the need to complete the annual Free and Reduced-Price Meal application. The extension of the no-cost meals benefit to all students is expected to expire at the end of this school year, meaning families must submit an application and be approved to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.

immunization

Required Immunizations

All students are required to be immunized against certain communicable diseases to attend school in the state of Virginia. It is important for all students to receive the required immunizations.

Please talk with your family health care provider about whether or not your children are up to date on their vaccines before the new school year begins. Submit updated immunization records to your school as soon as possible. Appointments are required for most vaccination clinics. Don’t wait until the last minute when you might not be able to find an appointment. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of clinics or schedule with your family’s health care provider

More information on immunization requirements and the necessary documentation is available online.

Meningococcal Vaccine Reminder - Class of 2023

The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into one of its schools. All students in grade 12 are required to have been immunized with one dose of the Meningococcal Vaccine given at the age of 16 or older. Please read this information for submitting records to SCHS.  Proof of immunization must be submitted to the school. These documents need to be returned prior to the start of the 2022-23 school year, preferably by July 1. For more information on this requirement, visit this FCPS website

New Asthma Form for the 2022-2023 School Year

Attention parents of students with asthma and rescue inhalers. Starting with the 2022-2023 school year, all students bringing an inhaler to school will need to have a signed copy of the Virginia Asthma Action Plan with them, in addition to an FCPS authorization form. The asthma action plan must be filled out by the physician and the authorization by the parent (and student for self-carry.) If you are planning to send in an inhaler in the fall and have not received an email with details, please reach out to the public health nurse at  fsarpong@fcps.edu for more information.

senior parent night

Senior Parent Information Night

Student Services has some upcoming events for both students and their families to assist you in your post-secondary planning.

For Parents/Guardians:

Senior Parent Information Night is coming up on Wednesday, September 7th at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  We will discuss the nuts and bolts of post-secondary planning including:

  • College selection and admissions timelines
  • College application components
  • Process for sending important documents such as official transcripts, counselor and teacher recommendations, and test scores when applicable
  • Options available through Northern Virginia Community College
  • Financial aid resources
  • Brief overview of post-secondary options such as military enlistment, employment, and trade and technical education

We welcome any follow up questions at an informal parent Q&A on Thursday, September 15th at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria. (Please note that the Q&A is meant for general questions, and we ask that specific questions related to your senior be directed to their individual counselor.)

For Students:

Seniors will participate in group meetings with their counselor to go over college and career planning topics and important Senior To-Dos for this fall during Advisory.  Seniors with last names A-Mon will meet with their counselors on September 6th and last names Moo-Z will meet on September 8th. Students should check in with their Advisory teacher at the beginning of the period before being dismissed to their designated locations. Counselors will also be following up with seniors throughout the fall to discuss individual plans.

Other:

In the meantime, seniors and parents can work on completing two important forms that help your counselor craft any required counselor recommendations. They are the "Request for Counselor Recommendation (Student Form)" and "Parent Input form" at this link:  https://southcountyhs.fcps.edu/student-services/post-secondary-planning. Thank you to those of you who already submitted them last spring and over the summer.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12).  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or fle@fcps.edu.
