Hello Justice HS Students, Families, and Community Members:

As we prepare to open school in a few weeks, our classrooms are 99% staffed and ready to welcome our students back from summer break.  We are working hard to continue to fill remaining vacancies and to ensure that we will have a licensed educator in every classroom.

While the current landscape of education is challenging, we have plans in place to address the remaining vacancies.  These plans are student-centered and designed to meet the needs of all our students.

Read below for additional amazing opportunities and important news for students and parents. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Student Rights & Responsibilities Update - Cell Phone Use: An important update made to the Student Rights & Responsibilities document (SR&R) for the coming school year is the regulation to prohibit cell phone use in classrooms. Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones during class unless permitted by the teacher for instructional purposes. We acknowledge this new policy will be a shift for many students and families this year, but research shows that managing phone use during class time will support students’ attention and ability to fully engage in their learning. Schools are partnering with parents to have students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class. Please talk to your child(ren) before the start of the school year about these expectations. Families may also review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users.

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Now Available: Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications are now available. Students approved for Free and Reduced-Price Meals may qualify for additional benefits such as waived or reduced fees for instruments, uniforms, field trips, FCPS class fees, and Parktakes classes. Schools also benefit from funding opportunities based on Free and Reduced Price Meal application numbers. Visit the FCPS Free and Reduced-Price Meals website for more information.

Class of 2023 Meningococcal Vaccine Reminder: The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into one of its schools. All students in grade 12 are required to have been immunized with one dose of the Meningococcal Vaccine given at the age of 16 or older. Please review the immunization requirements here. Proof of immunization must be submitted to the school. These documents need to be returned prior to the start of the 2022-23 school year. For more information on this requirement, visit this FCPS website.

Free Vaccine Clinics: The Fairfax County Health Department will host on-site school vaccine clinics that offer three (3) required immunizations: Meningococcal (MenACWY), Tdap, and HPV. Note: The Meningococcal vaccine is required for grade 12 students. The clinics are walk-in, no appointment necessary. See below for more information:

Faculty/Staff Updates

JUSTICE WELCOMES ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES!!!

As many already know, the activities lost two great Assistant DSAs friends and colleagues over the past 6 months to promotions at other schools. We wish Dylan Forshay and Brandon Sutphin the best in their new roles as the Directors of Student Activities at Thomas Jefferson and Annandale, respectively. Just not too much... as both remain in the National District and we look forward to BEATING them! Hah!

I couldn't be more excited to announce the next two "Rockstar" ADSA appointments!

gregGreg Weisbecker, has filled the shoes as an Assistant DSA in the office over the past 6 months and started his role as the 12 month, fulltime ADSA on July 18th. Greg has served as our Head Football Coach for the past 4 years and will continue in that role. He joined the H&PE and athletic department in the fall of 2016 after graduating from James Madison University. While at JMU, Coach Weisbecker was very involved in working with the athletic teams through the strength and conditioning program.

monicaJoining Greg in the office as an ADSA this coming year will be Monica White. Coach White has served and will continue to serve as our Head Girls Lacrosse Coach. She also teaches personal fitness, athletic leadership and adaptive physical education at Justice. Coach White began her career at Justice in the fall of 2018. Prior to coming to Justice, Coach White played Division 1 Lacrosse at Colgate University. She began her career teaching and coaching in Liverpool, England before returning to the states.

We are super excited to have Coach White and Coach Weisbecker as part of the activities office team. Their leadership abilities, communication and relationship building skills are second to none.

WELCOME SARAH WALLACE – INSTRUCTIONAL COACH!!!

sarahSarah Wallace recently moved from Colorado Springs to Springfield Virginia. Sarah has an undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware in secondary English education and is working on her masters through Emerson College.  Sarah’s previous work included teaching middle school and high school English and reading intervention. In addition, she led the MTSS team and writing professional development within her school. During her time in Colorado, she also worked to piloting and mentoring teachers on new curriculum initiatives while supporting district wide professional development teams.  Sarah enjoys hiking, paddle boarding, reading, and going to the beach.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS

Two of our AVID students completed a 6 week internship at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History through the Smithsonian YES program (Youth Engagement through Science).  Below are some photos of rising senior Aileen Mendieta (she is the one in the white lab coat working with bones) and rising junior Katerin Quispe Colonel.  While at the Smithsonian, they worked with museum experts on various topics, including each doing their own educational project on a specific subject (Aileen on understanding an animal’s history through their bones; Katerin on how leaf fossils can help us understand climate change throughout history).  They got to present their topics to museum visitors.

This is one of many experiences our AVID students did over the summer.  Thanks to the work they did applying to these programs during their AVID classes last year, we had a number of students also go to the Black College Institute and Hispanic College Institute at Virginia Tech, the Youth Leadership Program (YLP) at George Washington University, camps at James Madison University, and other summer programs.  We are so very proud of them!
