Wakefield Forest Summer Update

Open House Information - CHANGE

Open House events will take place on Friday, August 19:

  • 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM     Families Last Name A - L
  • 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM   Families Last Name M - Z

Due to construction we are making changes to the Open House plan. Parking at the school is very limited and we encourage families to walk if they can. Additional parking is available at St. Matthews Methodist Church.

Based on the information we have today, students and families may enter the building through Door 1 (front of school), Door 3 (bus door) or Door 4 (near the gym) or go directly to the Wolf Den (Outside Quads for grades 3-6.) Due to construction, access to the Wolf Den is best along the gym side of the building near door 4 or through the marked access opening in the fence along Iva lane.

Staff members will be available to help students and families find the correct classroom(s).

If you have purchased school supplies, you are welcome to bring them to school and take them to the classroom during Open House. This will make the first day of school easier for your child.

  • Wakefield Forest Spirit Wear will be sold in the cafeteria. Other vendors, such as our business partner, Andrew Gause Martial Arts, will be available to families in the cafeteria.
  • The Patrol meeting will be at 10:30 AM in the gym with Mrs. Massimo cjmassimo@fcps.edu and Mrs. Maxwell-Gold mmmaxwellgol@fcps.edu.

Class Lists

Your child’s teacher assignment will be emailed to you on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. Shifts to class assignments will continue to occur until that date. While families were provided with the opportunity to provide feedback, class assignments are determined by many factors including feedback from staff, families and services that students require. We respectfully ask that you do not request a change to class assignment.

Family Engagement Committee

We are seeking members of our school community who would be interested in serving on a family engagement committee. The objective of this committee would be to gain a diverse perspective from families on topics impacting our school. Topics would change throughout the year, but we expect our initial focus to be mays in which we celebrate differences at our school. If you are interested please email acalder@fcps.edu. Meetings will be held virtually on Zoom monthly.

Construction Corner

We continue to move forward with construction. Here are the most recent updates:

·       The concrete walkway from the building to the quads and to the temporary front entrance have been completed.

·       The next step for playground installation is to put in the drainage. At this time the playground will not be ready for the first day of school. Depending on weather, we hope it will be available following the Labor Day holiday.

Bus Transportation

Families in the bus riding area should receive routes August 12, 2022.  Please make sure your child arrives at the bus stop 5 minutes early and that you allow extra time for the bus to return to the stop in the afternoon.  Often the first week of transportation includes adjustments; thank you in advance for your patience!

Please remember that Kindergarten students who ride the bus in the afternoon must be met at the bus door and asked for by name by a parent, parent designee, guardian, or a responsible middle school age or higher sibling.  Kindergarten students not met will be returned to school.

School Supply Lists and Orders

School supply lists are available here.

In addition to the listed school supplies, all students need headphones. Kindergarten will use ipads this year, therefore a headphone with a straight jack is required. Grades 1-6 will continue to use laptops.

If your family needs help with school supplies, please contact our school counselor, Nancy Garcia-Henderson, at nagarciahend@fcps.edu or call the school office at 703-503-2300 and speak with Mrs. Holmes, registrar.

For returning students and families - If you ordered your supplies through the PTA. The PTA will deliver the orders directly to students' classrooms.
