Dear Eagle Families,

We have had some wonderful opportunities for family interactions in recent weeks. Here is just a glimpse of what has been happening at KJMS!

  • Last night, we met community members and families at our collaborative event: Ice Pops with Cops. We went to the Layton Hall community and passed out ice pops and books with our City of Fairfax Police Department. Our families got to meet our school SRO, Carrie Johns, and other officials like our new City Superintendent, Jeff Platenberg.
  • This past week we distributed over 600 computers. It was fun meeting students and families and sharing ice cream! If you were unable to attend, no worries! Your child will get a computer on the first day of school.
  • Recently, we hosted an in-person Meet the Admin Coffee. We would like to host a virtual event next week for those of you who were unable to attend. Please let us know of your interest by signing-up so we may send you the link.
  • And of coming importance is our next huge event: EagleFest! On Thursday, August 18, we are inviting students and families back as we host our annual EagleFest! It should be a great event with meeting staff members and visiting food trucks.

As you begin to wind down your summer vacations and time on a more relaxed schedule, know that we are winding things up and preparing to receive nearly 1,100 students. At the time of this writing, we have fully staff ALL of our teaching positions at KJMS! This has been a huge cooperative effort with our administrators and human resources, and we are so excited to present an amazing lineup of new teachers to our community and profession. We will soon share a slide show for you to get to know our KJMS family.

Thank you for your continued support with participation in our summer events and by signing-up to bring in food and treats for our staff for the upcoming end of the week luncheon. Together, we will SOAR at Katherine Johnson Middle School this year!

Stay safe,

Tammy Silipigni

Student Rights and Responsibilities Update - Personal Device Away for the Day (AFTD)

An important update made to the Student Rights & Responsibilities document (SR&R) for the coming school year is the regulation to limit cell phone use during the school day for middle school students. Students will not be permitted to use their cell phones, earbuds, smart watches, and other similar devices during the instructional day from 7:30 AM to 2:15 PM. Phones must be silenced and kept away for the duration of the school day. Storage may be in a locker, backpack, pencil bag, etc., during the day.

We recognize this new policy may be a shift for some students and families this year. Schools are partnering with parents to help students understand the importance of putting their phones away to minimize distractions during class. Please talk to your child(ren) before the start of the school year about these new expectations. Families are encouraged to review the parental controls available for all iPhone and Android users.

Expectations will be emphasized with all students during orientation and beginning of school activities. Thank you for your support and partnership.
