WAKEFIELD FOREST Important Message

    Letter From the Principal

    Dear Wakefield Forest Families,

We are getting closer to the start of school. There is a lot happening at Wakefield Forest with the renovation. As you come to the school you will likely be surprised to see that most of the trees on the property have been taken down, there is fencing up in many locations and there is equipment everywhere. Our new temporary main entrance is currently being built along the front of the school. Additional parking is being put in along the left side of the building because the front lot will be used for construction equipment.

When you enter the school you will also notice differences. The ceiling tiles in the hallways have been removed so construction teams can access wiring and pipes. This will take some adjustments as it doesn’t look like a typical school environment.

The Wolf Den (Quads) on the field will house grades 3-6, as well as STEAM, strings and music. These are completed and once our teachers have put their special touches, they will be great learning spaces for students. These spaces will be equipped with SMARTBoards and laptops just like our indoor spaces and have a large restroom trailer for students and staff.

We know that Wakefield Forest is going to look different during the construction process, but we remain committed to providing your children with an amazing learning experience. I firmly believe it is the people, not the building, that make a school and we have the very best staff.

Renovation will result in unexpected changes, these will be communicated through News You Choose and eNotify. Please carefully read emails from the school. If you want to follow the renovation process, follow us on Twitter @wakefieldforest and @sbprindle.

Thank you for your support as we navigate uncharted territory in building the Wakefield Forest Elementary of the future.

    Open House Information - CHANGE

Open House events will take place on Friday, August 19:

    • 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM     Families Last Name A - L
    • 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM   Families Last Name M - Z

Due to construction we are making changes to the Open House plan. Parking at the school is very limited and we encourage families to walk if they can do so. Additional parking is available at St. Matthews Methodist Church.

Based on the information we have today, students and families may enter the building through Door 1 (front of school), Door 3 (bus door) or Door 4 (near the gym) or go directly to the Wolf Den (Outside Quads for grades 3-6.) Due to construction, access to the Wolf Den is best through the building or outside along the building on the gym side near door 4.

Staff members will be around the building to help students and families find the correct classroom(s).

If you have purchased school supplies, you are welcome to bring them to school and take them to the classroom during Open House. This will make the first day of school easier for your child.

    Construction Corner

    • Meridian is our contractor for the renovation. All of their staff, as well as any subcontractors, must be background checked and cleared to be on site.
    • FCPS maintains an one site coordinator for the project at all times work is being completed, including weekend work.
    • Safety fencing will remain in place to separate students/staff from safety hazards.
    • We will have additional staff to support with arrival and dismissal.
    • Trailer doors will remain locked during the school day.
    • The trailer area will be secured in the evening. Trailers are connected to the overall school security system.
    • The current plan is for the school playground to be opened for the first day of school.
    • Our outdoor eating area from last school year will be relocated. The new space is smaller and we plan to do some indoor and outdoor eating based on logistics, safety and weather.

    School Supply Lists and Orders

School supply lists are available here.

In addition to the listed school supplies, all students need headphones. Kindergarten will use ipads this year, therefore a headphone with a straight jack is required. Grades 1-6 will continue to use laptops.

If your family needs help with school supplies, please contact our school counselor, Nancy Garcia-Henderson, at nagarciahend@fcps.edu or call the school office at 703-503-2300 and speak with Mrs. Holmes, registrar.

For returning students and families - If you ordered your supplies through the PTA. The PTA will deliver the orders directly to students' classrooms.
